Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

VMworld In Retrospect

September 19, 2011 08:18 AM
It would be hard to call the recent VMworld anything but a rousing success. After all, 20,000 attendees descended on The Venetian in Vegas, and the vast majority would agree the trip was worth it. However the total experience wasn’t perfect, and as someone who’s attended, covered and occasionally exhibited at conferences for more than 25 years, I think it’s time for VMware to stop running the whole show itself and hire a professional trade show management company.

Viva VMworld!

September 01, 2011 02:03 PM
Despite Hurricane Irene’s best efforts, I finally made it to Las Vegas for VMworld late Monday night, and I have to say the joint is jumping. VMworld is starting to feel more like Comdex or Interop in their heyday than a vendor-driven education conference. I, for one, was ecstatic to get back to the days when people were excited about the tech as opposed to the stock price, and the tech talk spread from the show floor and breakout rooms to the craps tables.

Dealing With VMware's I/O Challenges

September 01, 2010 10:36 AM
One of the key themes at VMworld this week is dealing with the I/O challenges that a physical host loaded up with a dozen or more virtual machines places on the storage and the storage infrastructure. This is caused by consolidating hundreds of I/O friendly stand alone systems into a few dozen hosts. While virtualization reduces the number of physical servers, it now makes every server an I/O nightmare.

The Challenges Of VMworld

August 31, 2010 10:26 AM
VMworld kicked off yesterday, and despite the crowd, everything seems to be under control. The media/analyst area is no exception. It is under strict control (i.e. too much), making it very difficult for industry people like myself to get information to you about what is going on at the event. VMworld organizers will let the analysts and press in the area, but not the vendors we need to speak to. Anyone see a problem with that?

Thoughts From VMworld

September 04, 2009 01:32 PM
Once again I'm leaving a conference with my head aching from the firehose of information I've been fed by vendors and my feet are just generally aching. It would be hard to tell from the crowd at VMworld that we're in the middle of a recession as the show floor seemed busy from start to end.

Live from VMworld

September 02, 2009 10:13 PM
This week I will be at VMworld and will be giving ongoing reports of what we see there. Overall, the show seems as busy as last year. The facility is a little smaller and attendance may be a little lighter but they are expecting between 10,000 and 12,000 people. Look for quick updates, in reverse order, throughout the week. Updates will also appear at the top of the page.

Rosenblum Sees Expanding Role For Virtualization In Data Center

September 13, 2007 07:35 PM
The Stanford professor makes a compelling case at VMworld for virtualization as a panacea for data center woes.

IBM Blade/VMware Bundle Brings Virtualization To The Desktop
