Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

VDI Rolling Review: Citrix XenDesktop 3.0

January 20, 2010 08:00 AM
Citrix XenDesktop 3.0 brings a small technology advantage to our Rolling Review of virtual desktop infrastructure products. The successful integration of XenSource, now called Citrix XenServer, coupled with the dominant position of XenApp (formerly Presentation Server), helps XenDesktop 3.0 take full advantage of the ICA protocol to stream virtual desktops to clients.

VDI Rolling Review: Sychron OnDemand Desktop

January 20, 2010 08:00 AM
Before the big names in server virtualization started paying close attention to the potential of virtual desktops, Sychron was already making a name for itself as a thought leader for developing solutions that enable quick provisioning, management, and guaranteed performance of virtual desktops on a large scale. As a result, Sychron is more of a management and front play in the VDI space that integrates with back-end hypervisors, most notably VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V, to manage the delivery of virtual desktops to users.

VDI Rolling Review: Ericom's WebConnect Goes Above And Beyond

January 07, 2010 10:23 AM
Our Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) rolling review continues with Ericom. Founded in 1993, Ericom established itself early on as an diverse application delivery platform. Today, Ericom's PowerTerm WebConnect makes a strong case for becoming a part of your VDI infrastructure. WebConnect supports all the major virtualization platforms out there. At the time of our review Ericom was the only vendor, other than Citrix, to offer power and state control and the ability to mass-provision virtual desktops. Ericom also supports some community versions of Xen, like Red Hat and Novell Xen, and easily takes the prize for the largest number of supported virtualization engines.

Will Desktop Virtualization Break-Out In 2010?

January 04, 2010 08:30 AM
We've been covering Desktop Virtualization ad nauseam at Network Computing and for good reason. As a technology, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) has the potential to change the way we deliver an operating environment to our users. Unfortunately, broad acceptance of VDI has been hampered by vendors' inability to stream graphically intensive apps over remote viewing protocols like RDP, ICA, and others. If the lofty promises of the leaders in the virtual desktop computing space hold true, 2010 might be a breakout year for VDI.

Sun and Ashbourne Partner On Cloud-based Desktop

December 07, 2009 08:47 AM
Sun Microsystems is partnering with Ashbourne Technology Group to offer what the companies are call a cloud-based "desktop as a service" package aimed at primary and secondary education markets. The service can deliver Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris desktops to any device that has a Java-based browser, though the companies are suggesting that schools choose the Sun Ray thin client as the end-point of choice.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Rolling Review Kickoff

December 04, 2009 09:53 AM
Virtual desktop infrastructure, or VDI, speeds up bandwidth-intensive applications for remote workers and lets small IT staffs deploy new applications and perform reboots on demand quickly to large numbers of desktops in far-flung locales. Still, when budgets are tight, costs are top of mind, and VDI lowers operating expenses while providing an extra dose of security—users can't install software, so a major attack vector is effectively closed down.
