Desktop Virtualization Saves School District $250,000
August 16, 2010 09:30 AM
Charles Kanavel, director of technology for Campbell Union (CA) High School District felt a bit like the guinea pig on a training wheel: moving feverishly but not really making any progress. Every few years, the district had to refresh its desktop PCs and laptop systems, and it seemed like once the job was finished, it was time to start again. So in the spring of 2009, the district decided to go in a different direction, toward desktop virtualization, and the change quickly began to pay dividends.Amerisure's VDI Changes IT Support Requirements
July 20, 2010 09:00 AM
Same old, same old. That was what was on tap for Amerisure Mutual Insurance Co., which like many corporations, followed a traditional path to desktop computing upgrades, revitalizing its PCs every three years or so. Then, wanting a change, the insurer decided to switch to a desktop virtualization system, a move that has saved the company money, time and manpower.Cresent Bank Reaps Benefits Of Pano Logic's Desktop Virtualization
June 15, 2010 11:27 AM
In the fall of 2008, Michael Goodman took over as the IT director at North Carolina-based Crescent State Bank with the mandate to upgrade the organization's IT infrastructure. One of the first decisions he made was to dump the financial agency's PCs and march to the forefront of the virtual desktop movement, a change that has paid dividends for the financial institution.Leostream Upgrades Virtual Desktop Broker Software
June 10, 2010 12:41 AM
Leostream, a company whose Connection Broker software helps manage virtual desktop environments, has launched Connection Broker 6.5, which features improved user authentication, better matching of the virtual image to the display screen resolution and additional management tools. Connection Broker works with many of the major desktop hypervisors from companies such as Citrix, Microsoft and VMware. Connection Broker determines what resources a particular end user should be allocated when they log in. The product supports many desktop protocols such as Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and HP's Remote Graphics Software (RGS) protocol for graphic-intense image environments such as CAD/CAM systems. Connection Broker also supports other emerging protocols, such as PC-over-IP and HDX.Trend Micro Releases VDI-Aware Endpoint Security
June 07, 2010 04:30 PM
Trend Micro's first virtualized desktop infrastructure (VDI)-aware version of its flagship OfficeScan endpoint security product addresses performance issues associated with signature updates and scanning operations for virtual desktops. OfficeScan 10.5, which is included as part of Trend Micro Enterprise Security, is designed to reduce resource contention on VDI hosts, as multiple users require signature updates several times a day. The issue is particularly acute first thing in the morning as users log in for the day and receive updates. Further, full scheduled scans--typically once per week--put a heavy load on endpoints. In a VDI environment, scanning multiple VMs concurrently exacerbates the problem and can slow or even crash the VDI host.Citrix Boosts Virtual Desktop With Wyse 'Zero Client'
May 17, 2010 02:26 PM
Wyse Technology has entered what heretofore had been an innovator's market: the zero-footprint client for virtualized desktops. A zero client is a small piece of hardware to which peripherals and a display may be attached. But it dispenses with everything in a traditional operating system that's not needed to display virtualized applications. Pano Logic and other startups have produced little boxes that host an application's pixel display, with a minimalist CPU. Now Wyse, the thin client maker, has entered the field with Xenith.Citrix Offers Free Encryption For Virtualized Application Data

At its Synergy user group meeting in San Francisco this week, Citrix Systems unveiled an encryption feature for virtualized applications running under its XenApp Server in the data center.Virtualization Taking Aim At The Desktop
May 10, 2010 08:00 AM
Virtualization has become quite popular in the data center where it has helped companies consolidate their server farms. Vendors are now pushing similar movement at the desktop, but to date, the potential benefits have not been as compelling nor usage as widespread, although that may change in the coming months.VDI Rolling Review: Wrap Up, Virtual Desktops Are For Real
February 02, 2010 08:30 AM
Server virtualization is one of the few technologies that have managed to live up to its hype. Can its virtual desktop cousin do the same, or is VDI destined to fizzle out like a wet firecracker? Our forecast says VDI has a good future in enterprise IT. Here are our reasons why.VDI Rolling Review: MokaFive Makes Offline Virtual Desktops A Reality
February 02, 2010 08:00 AM
Instead of a virtual desktop that connects to a beefy backend server, MokaFive creates a portable virtual machine that can run independently on any laptop or PC. IT has multiple options for issuing VMs to end users: the VM can be downloaded via a Web front end from MokaFive, burned to a DVD, or loaded onto a USB stick and handed out to employees. The MokaFive server was delivered to us as a virtual appliance for demo purposes, but it is typically packaged as a standalone installer for customers. You don't need much horsepower to run the MokaFive server, as its really just a Web-enabled management shim that controls access, authentication and virtual desktop master image management, among other system and reporting features.« Previous Page | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | Next Page »
