It’s A Solid-State Symposium
April 20, 2012 09:00 AM
Next week I’m off to sunny San Jose for the first Solid State Symposium and Storage Field Day. While Storage Field Day follows the general blogger’s tech-day format, the Solid State Symposium is a public event on Wednesday, when we’ll try to wrangle the future of solid state storage out of the sponsoring vendors and industry luminaries.SSD Opportunity & Threat To Storage Vendors
April 11, 2012 09:00 AM
In part two of our examination of the state of enterprise SSDs/flash storage, we look at the implications for vendors, a mix of new and existing companies seeking to capitalize on a large and growing opportunity.Solid State Drives New Wave of Storage System Startups

It was just last year that many of us in the storage chattering class were talking about how the market for mainline storage systems had consolidated after 3Par and Compellent were swallowed up by HP and Dell, respectively, leaving the market with just one or two smaller vendors to keep the big boys honest. That discussion failed to recognize that solid state storage had made the transition to the mainstream, and that there was a new wave of startups building storage systems optimized for flash.Hard Disk Shortage Driving Up Prices

Ever since Uncle Al Shugart presented the world with the ST-506, we could count on the fact that tomorrow's disk drives would be cheaper, on a dollar-per-gigabyte basis, than the ones we can buy today. I've regularly advised clients to plan to buy disk capacity later, as it will be cheaper and the disk drives will probably hold more. However, for at least the next few months, we're going to be facing a shortage of disk drives, and prices are already headed upward.Data Deduplication And SSDs: Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together

It should come as no surprise to even the most casual observer that data deduplication and SSDs have been the most significant technologies in storage during the past few years. Until recently, however, they have been applied to very different problems. The solid state storage story has been about performance, but data deduplication, while it has begun to sneak into primary storage, was about efficiency and was mostly relegated to secondary storage systems.Repackaging SSD for the Enterprise

Repackaging SSD technology so that it is a flexible storage alternative for any hardware platform is an approach that more vendors are likely to adopt.Live From C-Drive

Compellent's automatic data progression that moves data pages between tiers of storage in a Storage Center is already the most sophisticated way to take advantage of SSDs in a SAN array.« Previous Page | 1 | 2
