Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Does Primary Storage Deduplication Kill Archive And Backup?

July 02, 2010 10:19 AM
As we begin to test primary storage deduplication technology, our initial findings are that the latency it introduces may be a non-issue for many data centers and applications. It may soon be a non-issue for all data centers and applications. If you can get deduplication on primary storage for "free" from a performance perspective, what is the impact of primary storage on the other tiers of storage? Does primary storage deduplication kill archive and backup?

Data Protection Storage Is Different

May 12, 2010 01:00 PM
As data protection software becomes more intelligent, it may appear as though we need less of the storage hardware that holds protected copies of the production data. Many data protection software vendors are actively promoting the concept that you can use any disk system as a backup destination. Should you use a cheap SATA array or a data protection storage system?

The Cloud Won't Be Like ILM

April 06, 2010 04:00 PM
The best thing about comments to blogs is that sometimes they require a response that is so long it becomes a blog itself, or in the case of DanB's latest response to my SNW Blog, it can become two or even three. It was a great comment and underscores some of the mistakes that we in the analyst/media make when it comes to a subject like cloud storage. Dan's first point and the focus of this entry was that clouds sounded like the next ILM (Information Life Cycle Management). By that I take it that he meant we are guilty of over-hyping, much like we did with ILM.

If Disk-Drives Weren't Proprietary, Storage Would Still Be Expensive

March 17, 2010 04:00 PM
Every once in a while I'm chagrined when another storage blogger, who should know better, starts complaining about the huge difference between the cost of a 2TB hard drive they buy at Fry's and the cost of a similar amount of storage in an enterprise array. Ladies and gentlemen, while disk drives may account for most of the weight of a disk array, we're past the point where they make up most of the value.

Tight Squeeze: EMC Joins The High Density Storage Brigade

January 19, 2010 08:48 PM
Back in the Twentieth century the increase in disk drive bit density allowed us to keep up with growing data sets by periodically replacing disk arrays with ones using drives that hold 4-8 times the data in the same space. Lately the data we have to store has been growing faster than disk drive capacity, and as a result, vendors have been experimenting with high density arrays packing more drives in the same space. This week EMC threw their hat in the ring with a double-deep rack for Clariion mid-range arrays.

Western Digital Out First With 4K Sectored Drives

January 04, 2010 10:30 AM
In a move planned since the turn of the century, Western Digital's latest Caviar Green drives use 4K data sectors rather than the 512 (and occasionally 520) byte sectors that have been the norm. The larger sector size both boosts the formatted capacity and enables better ECC that can correct larger errors than today's drives could. Since today's operating systems and RAID controllers are expecting 512 byte blocks, the Caviar Green does 512 byte emulation, but as most of us would suspect, there are a few pitfalls awaiting blind installation of a 4K drive in a system that's not ready for it.

Starz Animation Beefs Up Storage Performance For Heavy Production Schedule

December 11, 2009 08:00 AM
As a name-brand movie channel on cable and satellite television outlets, Starz Animation staffs 300 employees in a 45,000 foot production facility and houses 1,200 servers in its film rendering farm. No one would believe that Starz Animation was supporting and growing its robust production business in a "mix and match" environment of systems and storage resources it had accumulated over the years, but that was exactly what was going on--until recently.

EMC FAST Brings Storage Tiering To Fibre Channel, SATA And Flash

December 08, 2009 10:45 AM
EMC today unveiled FAST, or "fully automated storage tiering" software, that analyzes data usage in its storage arrays and automatically moves data to the most optimal tier for performance, whether Fibre Channel, SATA or flash drives. The software works with EMC's Symmetrix V-Max and Clariion CX4 networked storage systems and its NS unified system.

3PAR's Policy Advisor Aids Data Migration

December 07, 2009 10:52 AM
Today 3PAR announced the availability of Policy Advisor, a software tool that analyzes data usage in the company's InServ storage clusters and recommends ways to optimize performance by moving data to different tiers. 3PAR's InServ clusters support up to eight controllers per array and employ tiers of high-performance Fibre Channel drives and high-volume SATA drives at various RAID levels.

Image Engine Consolidates Data Center, Ramps Up Storage For Performance Improvement

October 01, 2009 08:00 AM
Known for its graphics rendering work for the Stargate TV series, The Hulk, Blades of Glory and other video productions, Image Engine pushed storage and processing to the point where a re-assessment of IT architecture was needed--as well as a concerted strategy for reducing equipment footprints in the data center.
