Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Amid Mixed Results, Riverbed Buys Zeus, Aptimize

July 20, 2011 01:00 PM
Riverbed announced the acquisitions of Zeus Technology, which provides high-performance application delivery control for virtual and cloud environments, and Aptimize, which offers web content optimization. According to Riverbed, these companies enable asymmetric optimization of applications and web content, are highly complementary and will allow Riverbed to be a more strategic vendor to customers.

Riverbed Boosts Cloud Application Optimization With VMware

May 02, 2011 12:08 PM
Riverbed is extending the cloud computing services and thin client software supported by its Steelhead WAN optimization product line. The cloud version of Steelhead now includes support for providers that use VMware's ESX-based environment in addition to Amazon's Citrix-based services, while the standard version now supports thin clients (or desktop virtualization) with the Windows Aero user interface.

Welcome To The WAN Optimization Shell Game

April 11, 2011 09:30 AM
In the early days of Ethernet switch vendors, IT organizations would routinely hear vendors profess to deliver better line rate performance at 20 percent less than the market leader. The catch, because there was always a catch in this industry, was that performance was only achievable in specific circumstances. Turn on port monitoring or enable encryption and Ethernet switch performance would skid to a halt. A similar story may be brewing in the WAN optimization space. While vendors, such as Blue Coat, Riverbed, and Silverpeak, rush to tell us about how they can achieve incredible performance improvement, turning an OC-3 into an OC-12, other limiting factors may prevent end users from actually seeing those numbers.

The Importance Of Correcting Packet Loss In VDI

March 30, 2011 11:13 AM
Recently, on the LinkedIN WAN optimization professionals group, I participated in a conversation around whether virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is ready for the WAN. Face it, delivering responsive VDI over the WAN is going to be a challenge. One of the interesting points that came up was the importance of correcting for packet loss when considering WAN optimizers.

What WAN Optimizers Can Learn From Firewalls

March 11, 2011 10:28 AM
Listening to the give and take about WAN optimizers made me remember another battle between networking giants. It was nearly 10 years ago, during the early days of firewalls, when it seemed Marcus Ranum, then with Network FlightRecorder, would go head-to-head with Check Point's Gil Schwed on a weekly basis. Ranum was among the early creators of the application proxy and was vociferous about the value of delivering a firewall that terminated and inspected every session before passing the contents onto the destination. It was very effective, very secure and yet ultimately eclipsed by competing approaches.

WAN Optimization and the VDI Challenge

February 14, 2011 11:56 AM
I was sitting in on a peer-to-peer exchange about virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) hosted by Wikibon and listening to how great VDI is for organizations. I asked about multisite VDI and what recommendations people had for implementing VDI between sites. The speaker paused and said that she hadn't see any multisite implementations. No surprise there. VDI itself is still in its infancy, but it hit me once again that if organizations are going to see VDI's benefits at the remote office, they've got to pay close attention to their WAN acceleration layer.

Gartner: WAN Optimization Adapts To New Demands

January 05, 2011 01:54 PM
In its just-released Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization Controllers (WOCS), Gartner looks at the current state of the WAN optimization market. This Gartner magic quadrant shows a picture of a mature market that is adapting to customer demands, with an increased focus on cloud and data center-to-data center deployments, the consolidation of branch office hardware and increased support for mobile users.

Dell And Others Still Shopping For Storage

December 15, 2010 09:00 AM
On Dec. 13, Dell announced it has "entered into a definitive agreement for Dell to acquire Compellent ... " Dell also said it expects the transaction to be accretive to Dell non-GAAP earnings in its fiscal year 2012. There is no doubt that I, along with others in the industry, have blogged and written quite a bit on this topic over recent days. There has been no bidding war, no firing of shots across the bow from one vendor to another, and no soaring stock price in this quickly executed company acquisition. In my opinion, Compellent as a brand gets a big boost now, and Dell has bolstered its storage line up. So what's next for the Compellent brand as it integrates within Dell, and is Dell finished with storage vendor acquisitions?

Riverbed Gets Cloudy

November 12, 2010 08:57 AM
While cloud applications and WAN (Wide Area Network if I have to spell it out) acceleration seem like they would go together like Chicken and Waffles running a WAN acceleration appliance, even a virtual one, on your favorite cloud provider's platform would mean you had to keep a VM up, running and ticking off per hour charges all the time. If your cloud application was sending data to a storage provider like Iron Mountain or Nirvanix you wouldn't even have that option. Now Riverbed's Cloud Steelhead and Whitewater make the cloud seem closer to you than ever.

Arbor Networks' Peakflow Adds Mitigation And Geography-Based Detection

October 22, 2010 08:22 AM
Arbor Networks' latest release of its flagship PeakFlow SP DDoS detection and mitigation and network management product offers geo-political IP alerting on traffic spikes from suspect countries and IPv6 BGP support for greater visibility into traffic flows. With Peakflow SP 5.5, Arbor is also offering a stand-alone version of its Threat Management System appliance, allowing carriers and enterprises to rapidly deploy DDoS mitigation in the face of attacks.
