Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

HP Breaks Innovation Gridlock With New Offerings

May 13, 2010 08:00 AM
HP has a term for the burden of IT operational costs that prevent companies from using technology to create new products and grow their business: "innovation gridlock." The technology giant is today unveiling a multi-part strategy to break innovation gridlock with new services, servers, software and cloud computing initiatives.

Live Collaboration With Central Desktop For Microsoft Office

May 10, 2010 11:30 AM
Organizations that want to have co-authors on Microsoft Office documents don't have to wait until Microsoft Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010. They can do it now, according to Central Desktop. The Pasadena, Calif., SaaS vendor has announced Central Desktop for Office, a document-collaboration tool that lets users co-author Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents in real time, as well as open and save files into the cloud. In addition, organizations can share documents on existing versions of Office, rather than having to upgrade to Office 2010, says CEO and co-founder Isaac Garcia. Moreover, Excel co-authoring will not be supported in Office 2010, while it is via Central Desktop for Office.

Trend Micro PortalProtect Adds DLP For Sharepoint

May 06, 2010 10:00 AM
Trend Micro has added Web protection and lightweight data loss prevention (DLP) capability to its Microsoft SharePoint security product. PortalProtect 2.0 also supports SharePoint 2010, which will be formally announced May 12. PortalProtect is primarily an antivirus product, like competitive products from Symantec, McAfee, Sophos and, of course, Microsoft. The DLP market reflects growing concern over sharing of unauthorized information as people collaborate.

Calling It: NUMA Will Be The Shizzle In Two Years

May 04, 2010 09:00 AM
No matter how much hardware and software we throw at data center computing, there is the hard fact that we are limited to using only the resources on a single piece of server hardware. Oh, we can virtualize the PCI bus and share peripherals among multiple servers with virtual IO, and that has use cases. Non-Uniform Memory Architecture (NUMA) is used in high-performance computing to aggregate fundamental computer resources like CPU, RAM and IO across a high speed bus. NUMA has the capability of virtualizing the hardware itself and it's going to be the hot thing within two years.

Google & Amazon Propose Metric-Based Efficiency

April 16, 2010 09:41 AM
A group of data center operators and technology providers is asking the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to reconsider recommendations for cooling data centers that could become part of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 as an addendum. Standard 90.1 is a building efficiency standard that is often incorporated into building codes across the country.

NetEX HyperIP Accelerates Data Transfer

April 09, 2010 09:30 AM
NetEX (Network Executive Software) has announced HyperIP, an appliance that allows organizations with data networks made up of Cisco devices to run wide-area network (WAN) optimization software without having to add third-party hardware to their networks. There is often resistance between network administrations who want to stay with an all-Cisco network and application owners accustomed to using WAN optimization products that require an additional, non-Cisco physical appliance, says Bob MacIntyre, vice president of business development and marketing for NetEX. With HyperIP, users are "not putting in yet another piece of gear that has to be managed, but are putting software into an existing infrastructure based on VMware."

Microsoft Rolls Out Beta Version Of Supercomputing Software

April 08, 2010 09:51 AM
Microsoft has released Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Beta 2. The High Performance Computing (HPC) beta lets financial services, life sciences, digital content creation and other companies cluster together standard hardware to build high-powered compute environments. The beta is available now for download. New to this release is the ability to use free compute cycles of Windows 7 clients in compute jobs, to run Excel-based computations using HPC services and partnerships to let organizations build compute clusters that can run Linux or Windows. Microsoft released a previous beta in November 2009.

Adaptec Maxiq SSD Caching Solution With Microsoft Technology Demonstrates Dramatic I/O Acceleration

March 25, 2010 12:11 PM
Adaptec, Inc. today revealed benchmarking results for its MaxIQ SSD Cache Performance Solution. Integrating an advanced solid state storage control technology developed by Microsoft Corp., the solution is licensed and has been further enhanced by Adaptec. Using a simulation of a dynamic brokerage application environment, Adaptec consistently demonstrated a 3.2 times increase in system I/O (input/output) performance over the best results of a similar system without SSD caching. An increase in performance of 3.2 times can translate into a savings in capital and operating costs of up to 70 percent.
