Hitachi Data Systems Unveils Next Gen Storage

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) today introduced a new platform that Hitachi says provides organizations with more intelligent, scalable storage and also prepares them for the next-generation data centers leveraging virtualization and cloud computing. HDS unveiled a new upgrade to its management software that, among other things, can manage more volume of objects and capacity via one management server and offers visibility and correlation of applications, virtual machines and servers and logical storage devices for traditional and virtualized VMware and Microsoft Hyper V environments.

Microsoft Aims To Grow HPC Market With HPC Server R2

Microsoft Corp. has big expectations for Windows High Performance Computing (HPC) Server 2008 R2, which was formally introduced at the High Performance Computing Financial Markets Conference in New York today. Available immediately, the new and improved R2 is now interoperable with the Microsoft IT infrastructure, including Active Directory, SharePoint Server, Microsoft System Center and Microsoft Office. It has comparable performance to Linux at 32-51 percent lower cost over five years, offers HPC Services for Excel 2010 reduces calculation time of huge, complex spreadsheets by orders of magnitude and has growing application support.

CA Client Manager Eases Windows 7 Migration Woes

Baker Tilly, one of the world's largest accounting firms, was looking to update. Using CA solutions, it maximized employee productivity while migrating 2,400 users to Windows 7 in just four weeks.

Microsoft, Polycom Team On Unified Communications

Polycom continued to make strategic agreements for its videoconferencing solutions Monday as it announced a partnership with Microsoft to supply standards-based unified communications (UC) solutions covering a wide range of customers, big and small. Partnership will integrate voice, instant messaging, and videoconferencing for large enterprise, government, and SMB customers.

Windows 7 Surpasses Vista, But XP Still Dominates

Windows 7 in July surpassed its predecessor Vista in global usage share, but the older XP continued to dominate by a wide margin, an analysis firm says. At the end of last month, Windows 7 had a 14.46% share, while Vista fell to 14.34 percent, according to NetApplications. When Microsoft released Windows 7 to retail in October 2009, Vista had an 18.83 percent share.

Vizioncore's Free Management Pack For VMware

Vizioncore, a subsidiary of Quest software, has announced a free, downloadable application that allows users to monitor their VMware systems using Microsoft System Center Operations Manager. The Quest Management Pack for VMware is made up of a combination of features from Vizioncore that provide performance and availability monitoring, capacity trending, and server data collection. Paid product support is available as an additional option that is priced at $99 per socket for one year and $238 per socket for three years.

Riverbed Adds Microsoft Security Software On WAN Appliance

Riverbed is announcing that Microsoft's Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) will be available on Riverbed's Steelhead WAN optimization platform. TMG provides URL filtering, application proxying, and application and network-layer firewalling. With the introduction of TMG to the Steelhead platform, customers can enforce a consistent Web security policy for application protection, malware inspection and URL filtering at branch offices. Riverbed's Steelhead appliances include the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP), a VMware-based architecture that allows the device to run virtual appliances from select partners such Microsoft.

HP Targets Midsized Companies "Ten-To-One" Management Initiative

HP has introduced what it calls its "ten-to-one initiative," a combination of offerings to facilitate cloud computing, simplify risk management and infrastructure monitoring and strengthen HP channel partners that work with organizations with 1,000 to 10,000 employees. This in response to what HP sees as an under-served market of midsized companies that have increasingly complex IT systems but lack the internal IT staff of larger enterprises. It also sees a $7.5 billion market worth pursuing with new software and services.

Global Communications Leaders Form Industry Alliance To Deliver Unified Communications Interoperability

Citing the need to fully leverage customers' investments in communications systems and unite their global organizations, five global technology companies today joined to form the Unified Communications Interoperability Forum (UCIF), an alliance dedicated to enabling standards-based, inter-vendor unified communications (UC) interoperability. HP, Juniper Networks, Microsoft, Logitech / LifeSize, and Polycom, seek to unify the vibrant but fragmented UC ecosystem through this shared mission.
