Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

July 11, 2011 02:31 PM
Videoconference system vendor Polycom has introduced a new room video telepresence system that comes with the Microsoft Lync unified communications platform built right in. Because the Polycom CX7000 Unified Collaboration System features tight integration with Lync, participants in video meetings will experience the same user interface (UI) they are familiar with when using Lync on their desktop computers, as well as the familiar Polycom UI.

Determining a Private Cloud Delivery Model

June 28, 2011 01:37 PM
When designing a private cloud infrastructure as part of a next generation data center strategy, there are several options to choose from for a delivery model. In some cases, the IT service delivery will be some subset of true private cloud. In other cases, a full cloud model will be more appropriate, and delivery will typically be in an IaaS or PaaS model, with the possibility of a mixed model.

Single Point Of Failure: The Internet

June 01, 2011 07:00 AM
No matter how well you architect for redundancy and availability, there will certainly be single points of failure (SPOF) that you can't account for. The SPOF, in all of its forms, can make application mobility via VDI, cloud services, and netbooks like Google's Chromebook less attractive computing options when compared to fat clients, fat servers, and boring but reliable storage. While services can fail, let's not forget that the most frequent SPOF we deal with is the access networks at the Internet edge.

Microsoft Pledges Wider Support For Open Source Software

May 19, 2011 08:34 AM
A Microsoft executive speaking at an open source software conference this week in San Francisco said the company will provide expanded interoperability between its proprietary software and open source software running in the same software stack. Sandy Gupta, general manager of the open solutions group at Microsoft, told the Open Source Business Conference (OSBC) 2011 that Microsoft is now going to support the community version of the open source Linux operating system, in addition to its existing support for commercial versions of Linux. Gupta also announced Microsoft's support of the Windows Server2008 R2 Hyper-V hypervisor to run CentOS, a Linux distribution for application hosting vendors.

Microsoft unveiled a new way of delivering expert configuration and troubleshooting information for Windows Server and Windows applications at its Management Summit in Las Vegas Tuesday. By the end of the year, System Center, the management console for Windows Server, Hyper-V and other Microsoft systems, will get an add-on component, System Center Advisor, which automatically collects information on your server configurations, notifies you of known or potential problems and recommends a best practice alternative.

Dear RSA, Trust Is Earned Every Day--You're Not Earning It Today

March 22, 2011 09:00 AM
Trust is earned every day, and in information security, your customers' trust is easy to lose and hard to earn back. RSA had a breach with unknown ramifications. RSA Chairman Art Coviello's cryptic notice, and RSA's relative silence since then, is not helping customers feel confident in SecurID as a product or RSA as a company. Just look at what's happening on Twitter for gems like this: "Dear #RSA, open your pants and show us the problem, or we will never trust you again."

Microsoft Exec Says Cloud Cost Savings Are 'Too Big To Be Ignored'

March 14, 2011 10:14 AM
While many businesses are developing private clouds as a tentative first step into cloud computing, a Microsoft executive at a cloud industry conference in Silicon Valley said that, eventually, the company will plug into public cloud utilities because cost and efficiency benefits will be impossible to ignore.

New BridgeSTOR Appliance Aids Microsoft Data Protection Manager

February 07, 2011 08:00 AM
Data management appliance vendor BridgeSTOR has released a new application-optimized storage (AOS) appliance that shrinks data in Microsoft's System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) backup and recovery system. The new appliance provides data deduplication and compression capabilities that DPM doesn't offer on its own, and BridgeSTOR says it can shrink data stores to as small as 10 percent of their original size.

New Migration Tool Seeks To Spur Adoption Of Windows 7

January 25, 2011 01:31 PM
More than a year after its introduction, Windows 7 adoption is at only 10 percent in the enterprise market. Prowess, a maker of software to simplify migration, is improving its tools to accomplish increased adoption of Windows 7, even as its CEO expresses skepticism at industry optimism that 2011 may be "The Year of Windows 7."
