Juniper Networks has added antivirus scanning to its security gateway for VMware environments, adding to its existing stateful firewall, IDS and compliance capabilities. Force 10 is the latest networking vendor to announce a comprehensive vision for data center networking. Dubbed Open Cloud Networking, the idea is to use standard protocols to interconnect networking gear paired with their Open Automation capabilities, and offer integration and interoperation with network management and systems orchestration management servers. The company's announcement includes additional automation features and new hardware to support the vision. Do you need multi-path Ethernet in the data center using TRILL, Shortest Path Bridging (SPB), Cisco's FabricPath or Brocade's VCS in order to maximize network efficiency and reduce congestion? Probably not, unless you manage a very big data center with servers and access ports running into the tens of thousands. If you have less than 5,000 access ports in your data center, you can probably avoid routing Ethernet frames and use your vendor's multi-chassis link aggregation (MLAG) product-set to interconnect the access in an active/active design. Juniper finally got to 1 in its 3-2-1 strategy launched last year. The trend, to flatten the network, has been coming for a while. What's held back the flattening are little things, like being able to aggregate enough access ports over a high capacity and low latency interconnects, broadcast control, traffic management and, frankly, a strong driver to re-architect the network. But that hasn't stopped Brocade, Cisco and Juniper from coming out with some innovative data center network offerings. Juniper Networks is introducing a totally new design for data center networking that it calls QFabric, which collapses the typical three layers of networking equipment into one for faster performance, lower latency, better scalability, reduced power consumption and lower cost. During a visit to Sillicon Valley a few weeks back, I had the opportunity to stop in on Cisco, HP and Juniper and get demos of products that I have been briefed on and written about but haven't seen in action. These products include Cisco's Unified Computing System (UCS), Juniper's JunOS Space and HP's Intelligent Management Center. What struck me most about all three products is how much emphasis the vendors are putting on developing APIs, both for internal use and third-party integration. Juniper Networks' decision to increase its stake in virtualization security specialist Altor Networks to 100 percent was a fairly obvious move, says analyst Zeus Kerravala of the Yankee Group. As the 3PAR bidding war comes to a close, it seems time to examine the larger trend amongst IT manufacturers to go back to the future and recreate Thomas Watson's IBM or Ken Olsen's Digital Equipment Corporation, providing soup-to-nuts IT equipment and services.
