Cisco And Deloitte Wrong: Good Practices More Impactful Than Vendor Choice
February 21, 2012 02:57 PM
Cisco is fighting back against the notion that a multivendor network can simplify operations and reduce TCO. The networking giant commissioned a report by Deloitte that finds equipment operation costs will increase over the life of a network that uses equipment from disparate vendors. The fact is, one vendor versus multiple vendors is the wrong fight. Sound management practices and smart production selection will have a bigger impact on your IT costs than the number of vendors you use.FAST Paper Casts Doubt on SSD Future
February 21, 2012 11:00 AM
At last month's FAST (File and Storage Technologies) conference, researchers from UCSD and Microsoft Research presented a paper, titled "The Bleak Future of NAND Flash Memory" that's put the rosy all-flash-all-the-time future predicted by some in doubt for the long term. The gist of the paper's argument is that the physics of flash, and the researchers' testing, indicate that as flash density increases, the life and performance of flash will degrade to the point that by 2024 flash will no longer be a viable solution.Cisco & Friends Debate Cloud Future
February 17, 2012 09:00 AM
Cloud computing is evolving to the point where unique clouds will be developed for specific industry verticals, such as healthcare, government and financial services, predicts a Cisco Systems executive speaking at the CloudConnect 2012 conference this week in Silicon Valley. This runs contrary to what some have called the Coke versus Pepsi rule--that companies would not want to be in multitenant cloud environments with their competitors.Skanska Joins The Data Center Mod Squad
February 17, 2012 09:00 AM
Infrastructure and construction contractor Skanska USA has unveiled what it is calling one of the most efficient, greenest data centers in the world. The Telus Intelligent Internet Data Center will use Skanska's new modular design strategy, which will deliver a power usage efficiency (PUE) of 1.15, company officials say. Traditional data centers have a PUE of 2.0, says Terry Rennaker, VP of Skanska USA CoE.Cisco's Rumored Quasi-Proprietary SDN Strategy Irks Some, Surprises Few
February 15, 2012 09:00 AM
Cisco Systems' hint that it may introduce software-defined networking (SDN) technology that would not be based on the OpenFlow protocol prompted complaints from competing networking vendors and the OpenFlow community that Cisco was making another vendor lock-in play by offering proprietary technology, rather than standards-based products. Industry analysts say it's to be expected that Cisco would go the proprietary route as a way to preserve its industry-leading market share, and rival vendors are pushing open standards because that's the only way they can eat into Cisco's share.HP Reinvents The Industry-Standard Server

HP’s next generation of ProLiant servers will be more self-sufficient and automated in a way so as to reduce up to 50% of manual operations. The company unveiled ProLiant Generation 8 in Las Vegas as part of its Project Voyager initiative.Network Managers: Know Thyself
February 09, 2012 12:00 PM
As few as 25% of network managers have a clear understanding of what traffic courses through their networks and how to best manage it. Gigamon now offers technology that provides visibility for various network management tools that track performance, quality of service, security and other important metrics.App Adapter To Help Solarflare Beat Out 10-GbE Competitors Like Broadcom, Intel, Emulex
February 09, 2012 09:00 AM
Solarflare, a maker of network interface software and hardware, has announced a new 10-Gbit Ethernet (GbE) adapter that improves application performance for high-demand computing environments such as financial services firms. Many of those firms tried to develop their own field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to speed up performance but were stymied by the cost and engineering complexity.Cloud Application Management Complexity A Growing Challenge
February 08, 2012 11:00 AM
IT organizations are already using cloud in highly sophisticated ways in spite of the added level of complexity it introduces in managing applications. That was one of the surprise findings from Enterprise Management Associates' "Radar for Application Performance Management for Cloud Services: Q1 2012," according to the report's author, Julie Craig, research director, application management, at EMA.HP Refreshes DDMA Toolset
