Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Cisco Overlay Network Bridges Distributed Data Centers

February 08, 2010 11:05 AM
Cisco continues its march to complete its Data Center 3.0 vision with a proprietary method to interconnect remote data centers called Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV), extending a layer 2 Ethernet network over a WAN. The claim is that OTV is simpler. Cisco also counted 10Gb Base-T Ethernet modules for the Catalyst 6500 and 4900 switches, and new IO modules for the Nexus 7000. Additionally, they are furthering their Wide Area Application Services (WAAS) product with VMware as well as automatic recognition, acceleration and optimization of SaaS services.

Frost & Sullivan: IP VPN, Ethernet Preferred WAN Services

December 17, 2009 10:35 AM
IP VPN (Internet protocol virtual private network) and Ethernet WAN (wide area network) services are increasingly popular as companies seek flexibility, simplicity, scalability and high bandwidth for their data communication needs. This is especially so for corporations that need to manage site-to-site connectivity across multiple regions.

10GigE Tipping Point Reached - Problems Remain

December 08, 2009 10:30 AM
In shopping for new 10gig Ethernet switches for the lab I've realized that 10gigE pricing has reached the tipping point where the purchase price of two 10gigE connections for a server is about the same as for the six 1gigE ports I frequently need. Unfortunately with the DCB/CEE/DCE standards not yet ratified and the 10gig connector/optical module situation bringing truth to the old saying "I love standards - there are so many of them," the decision isn't as easy as I hoped.

Updating ESX To vSphere 4

December 04, 2009 08:00 AM
It's no secret that the latest version of VMware's virtual infrastructure is bigger, better, faster and more capable than ever, but along with the new feature set comes a whole load of complexity. vSphere 4.0 has a ton of features designed to bring system performance to the next level, but it requires a little tweaking to get the most out of them.

Arista Networks Expands Portfolio With New Gigabit Ethernet Switch

December 02, 2009 01:57 PM
Arista Networks has introduced a new high-end Gigabit Ethernet switch that the company says is designed to handle heavy traffic flows more seamlessly with less latency between the 1Gb servers and 10Gb storage servers that make up so many data centers. The switch is ideal for heavily loaded, next-generation data centers using asymmetric 1Gb and 10Gb Ethernet connections to support storage and Web-based applications, the company says.

Broadcom To Acquire Dune For $178 Million

December 01, 2009 03:06 PM
Broadcom (NSDQ: BRCM) is stepping up its data center and cloud computing offerings by agreeing to acquire Dune Networks, which has developed a 100 Gbps scalable chipset that is capable of connecting more than 10,000 servers in a single deployment. Broadcom said the deal involves a payment of about $178 million for the Israeli company.

Ethernet Alliance Members Expand Support of Converged Data Center Fabrics with iWARP Initiative

November 16, 2009 12:12 PM
The Ethernet Alliance today announced a new initiative focused on the advancement and market education of Internet Wide-Area RDMA Protocol (iWARP). iWARP brings low-latency fabric services to the world of Ethernet data centers. With rapid deployment of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) technology in the data center underway and the availability of cost-effective, dense 10GbE switches, iWARP is poised for significant penetration of the data center.

Fujitsu Debuts 26-port 10-Gig Switch

November 12, 2009 03:05 PM
Fujitsu Frontech North America today announced the XG2600 10Gb Ethernet switch. The 26-port XG2600 utilizes SFP+ optical modules and is designed for use with SFP+ twinax copper cables, a physical connection option that is finding greater acceptance as data center managers look for ways to balance reduced cost and easier physical installation. The XG2600 is also designed to reduce costs by lowering power consumption to less than five watts per port. Fujitsu is taking orders for the XG2600 now for fulfillment in December. List price for the XG2600 begins at $18,000.

HP Shakes Up Market With 3Com Acquisition

November 11, 2009 08:59 PM
Networking vendor HP has announced a definitive agreement to purchase 3com. The $2.7 billion purchase is expected to close in the first half of 2010. The deal will bring 3Com, TippingPoint and H3C into the HP stable, as well giving the company greater depth in the Chinese markets. The acquisition is transformative for HP and 3Com. Whether it is transformative for the networking market remains to be seen.

Brocade: NOT FOR SALE

November 09, 2009 03:06 PM
I'm told at the Brocade sales meeting last week in Las Vegas, CEO Mike Klayko put up a slide that read "NOT FOR SALE." I for one am joining the Brocade sales team in taking it at face value and moving on. It's not going to happen, at least not now.
