Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Ethernet Keeps Winning

May 05, 2010 08:00 AM
In my early days in this industry, there was a topology battle between Ethernet and Token Ring. Token Ring was just about to release an amazingly fast 16MB/s version. It was interesting to watch IBM representatives, still in suits and ties then, draw a circle on the board and make analogies to Token Ring and the railroad. They were making the case that Token Ring was going be the infrastructure of choice and that Ethernet's time had come.

Interop: Weaving New Fabrics

April 29, 2010 10:00 AM
I sat down and said, with a grin, "Infiniband is dead." Asaf Somekh VP of marketing and Christy Lynch, director of corporate communications for Voltaire, took the shot well, but my comment framed the conversation in a way that was useful. Over the last few days at Interop, the differentiator--the long term differentiator--in Ethernet switching is not going to be speeds and feeds. Network performance will always improve, sometimes in baby steps, sometimes in leaps. The differentiator is services, which aren't cut from the same cloth.

Interop Data Center Chair Jim Metzler On Networking

April 22, 2010 10:12 AM
We caught up with Jim Metzler who is the track chair of both the Networking track chair at Interop. He is also track chair for Application Delivery 2.0, as well. A lot is changing in Ethernet beyond "just faster," such as new standards for multi-pathing Ethernet and doing away with spanning tree, lossless Ethernet and better flow control. All of these feature will impact how you design networks.

Extreme's Data Center Play

April 21, 2010 12:45 PM
Extreme Networks has taken another step in articulating its data center vision with two new announcements to their data center product line. The first addresses applying policies to network traffic to and from the VM, and having those policies follow the VM during moves and disaster recovery events. The second is Extreme's stake in the ground supporting hypervisor switch by-pass that allows the hardware switch to move frames from VM to VM. Both announcements address architecture design requirements needed to support a virtualized data center. Extreme has to come up with something unique to compete with Cisco's Nexus architecture, HP's newly acquired H3C switch line, as well as Juniper and Brocade in the data center.

FiberTower Supports MetroPCS Backhaul Network Evolution To Ethernet

April 21, 2010 11:07 AM
FiberTower Corporation and MetroPCS Communications, Inc., announced today that they have entered into an agreement for FiberTower to provide Ethernet-based backhaul services in select MetroPCS markets. The evolution to Ethernet for network backhaul helps prepare MetroPCS for its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network launch that is planned during the second half of 2010.

Arista's 7500 Data Center Switch: High Speed, Small Profile

April 19, 2010 10:18 AM
Arista's new 7500 is a high-capacity, high-speed switch that the company is targeting a as a data center interconnect. Unlike the Campus LAN where Cisco commands a large percentage of the ports, the data center network is much more in play. Many networking vendors are promoting a flattening, but doing so requires a capacity switch in the center that can handle the total load gracefully. The Arista 7500 certainly fills that requirement. The biggest problem you may have is running 384 cables to the switch.

Voltaire Adds Ethernet To Unified Fabric Manager

April 15, 2010 11:30 AM
Voltaire has added Ethernet switch management to the Infiniband fabric management product, Unified Fabric Manager (UFM). UFM provides the management functions to provision the switching fabric from port to port and manage congestion within the fabric. In addition, UFM provides reporting and prediction tools to determine where bottleneck occur and manages capacity before it becomes a problem. Voltaire also integrated UFM with third party products like Blade Networks G8124 and Procurve's 6600-24XG top of rack switches and NICs from Chelsio, Intel and Mellanox.

Spirent Communications Validates Advanced Carrier Ethernet Interconnects Across Eight European Service Providers

April 12, 2010 02:18 PM
SUNNYVALE, Calif. Spirent Communications, a global leader in test & measurement, today announced it exclusively powered the testing of the Carrier Ethernet Global Interconnect demonstration conducted by EANTC and co-organized by ancotel to validate Carrier Ethernet service interoperability across eight European service providers including Belgacom ICS, Equinix, Expereo International, Level3 Communications, P&TLuxembourg, Teragate, Tinet, and Ucomline. The demonstration will be featured during the Light Reading Ethernet Europe 2010 conference in London, April 12-13.

Enterasys Improves Power And Capacity With New Stackables

April 12, 2010 01:00 PM
Enterasys Networks has refreshed its line of B3 and C3 stackable switches to improve its Power over Ethernet and 10GbE options as well as its policy management software. The new lines of switches, dubbed B5 and C5, now support IEEE 802.3at compliant high-power PoE, providing up to 30 watts per port. This is particularly useful for supporting devices such as Pan/Tilt/Zoom IP surveillance cameras, IP videophones, third-party 802.11n access points and virtual desktops.

IEEE 802 Standards Committee Turns 30

March 11, 2010 11:57 AM
The IEEE 802 Standard Committee, turns 30 on March 13th and has been a major influence on data networking. Ethernet is the OSI layer two standard for data communications and in 30 years, the speeds at which Ethernet operates has risen five orders of magnitude from 10 Mbps to 100 Gbps, and the diversity of where it is used (LAN, WAN, wireless) has grown. Indeed, topics have exploded from frame formats to power management and study groups to analyze esoteric events like static discharge in copper cables. That's a lot of work for a 30 year old group.
