Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

NetLogic Microsystems Introduces The Industry's Lowest Power 10/40/100GE PHY For Next-Generation Data Center Ethernet Applications

July 12, 2010 10:04 AM
NetLogic Microsystems, Inc., a worldwide leader in high-performance intelligent semiconductor solutions for next-generation Internet networks, today announced the availability of the industry's lowest power 10/40/100 Gigabit Ethernet PHY for next-generation data center applications. The new NLP1342 PHY is a quad-port device that integrates best-in-class receive equalization and transmit pre-emphasis technologies with ultra low latency to address new datacenter opportunities. The device supports 10Gbps SFI-to-XFI, 40Gbps XLPPI-to-XLAUI and 100Gbps CPPI-to-CAUI modes to enable a seamless migration of data centers from 10 Gigabit to 100 Gigabit throughputs.

Cisco's FabricPath: Multi-Path For Those Who Can't Wait For Standards

July 01, 2010 09:00 AM
Cisco made a few announcements at CiscoLive that extends thier footprint in the data center and offers Cisco customers migration paths to 10Gb Ethernet. The biggest announcement is Cisco's pre-standard multi-path Ethernet protocol called FabricPath that makes better use of switched infrastructure. Cisco is pretty far ahead of other networking vendors and most data centers with FabricPath, but for early adopters, Cisco and their customers will get some first hand experience with multi-path Ethernet. FabricPath is another step along Cisco path to virtualzing the data center network.

Overture Networks Switches It Up With G.8032 Ethernet Ring Protection

June 23, 2010 09:09 AM
Overture Networks, the industry's trusted Carrier Ethernet solutions provider, today announced the addition of G.8032 Ethernet ring protection switching to its UTS 4000 optical edge switch. The addition of G.8032 ring protection switching gives Overture's customers a technologically advanced and cost-effective solution for building secure mobile backhaul networks as they look to support the mounting bandwidth requirements of 3G and 4G services.

Emulex and ServerEngines Finally Wed

June 08, 2010 02:05 PM
As far as I know, there are no statistics for unmarried corporate partners, but Emulex and ServerEngines announced on June 7 they would join the 55% of couples that marry within 5 years of cohabitation and finally wed. It's easy to see why after test driving the car for only two years, that Emulex decided the performance of ServerEngines technology was outstanding and acquired the company.

Force10's Deep Buffer Switch

June 03, 2010 09:00 AM
Force10's new S60 to of rack switch demonstrates that with all the buzz around 10Gb Ethernet, 1Gb still has some legs in the data center. Enterprise IT is still buying servers with 1 or more Gb NICs on the motherboard. Until 10Gb LAN on motherboards is the norm, which will drive 10Gb pricing downward, Gb will be here to stay. There isn't much that is earth-shattering about the S60, but is a welcome addition for Force10's existing customers.

Brocade New 10GbE And FC Modules Increase Capacity

June 02, 2010 11:41 AM
Brocade is doubling its 10GbE capacity in its flagship MLX router platform and increasing the capacity of the company's DCX Backbone SAN Switch. The need for higher density and higher capacity network and storage infrastructure is driven by the increased use of virtualization in the data center and the explosion of data that needs to be stored and accessed. However, rack space and square footage in existing data centers is at a premium. Increasing density is the logical step in supporting denser data centers.

Ethernet Switch Sales Up, Led By Cisco

May 27, 2010 09:27 AM
Analysts are saying that 2010Q1 and 2009Q4 sales figures of Ethernet hardware such as switches and routers are up, in some cases approaching pre-recession levels. While the analysts don't go so far as to say the recession is over or that this is a full recovery, they are saying things are getting better, which they attribute to factors such as improvements in the economy, pent-up demand and a reduction in backlog. Technological drivers include the growth of voice and video over IP, network-based businesses and applications, network-attached devices, virtualization and cloud computing. Leading the upward trend is Cisco, who holds the largest share of the market.

New Developer Portal Supports Fast Integration Of Industrial Ethernet Interfaces

May 26, 2010 09:24 AM
Innovasic Semiconductor's new web-based Developer Portal provides access to a complete Industrial Ethernet design solution that includes development tools and personalized technical support. The portal is a secure and private workspace with tutorials, design and conformance testing resources, online access to evaluation hardware, comprehensive FAQs, and direct technical support. Having these resources in one place allows designers to quickly assess and integrate an Industrial Ethernet interface into their product.

Virtual Networking Is Not A Requirement

May 17, 2010 12:50 PM
Our clients ask us how network virtualization can help them and what it means for their IT priorities. I think most concepts of network virtualization add significant complexity to our IP networks where we really don't need it. In most cases, we tell our customers that it won't help much and that there are many other things they should worry about first.

The Acceleration of Bandwidth Adoption

May 07, 2010 10:52 AM
For many data centers the move from one level of bandwidth speed to another happens primarily when that upgrade in speed is the same price as the current speed. For example 8GB Fiber Channel (FC) is now almost the same cost as 4GB FC so it makes sense to finally begin that upgrade process. However my expectation is that the next wave of bandwidth upgrades will come at a substantially accelerated pace.
