Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Cloudera, NetApp Strike At EMC

November 07, 2011 02:41 PM
Cloudera and NetApp announced a partnership on Monday whereby the storage giant will make available Cloudera's Apache Hadoop distribution and enterprise management software, and Cloudera will support a NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop, a reference architecture for storage set for release in December. The partnership is clearly a response to an alliance struck in May between NetApp rival EMC and MapR Technologies.

Dell And EMC Exit Partnership Stronger Than Ever

October 19, 2011 02:00 PM
While Dell and EMC may not be parting best of friends after ending their 10-year relationship two years before the latest agreement was to expire, they are both better off than when they became the IT industry's best-known odd couple. Prior to hooking up, EMC was a major player in the enterprise storage market, while Dell was a PC company best known for its selling expertise. Both companies had relatively narrow markets and primarily sold direct. It was a multibillion-dollar relationship while it lasted.

EMC Boosts/Enhances VCE Vblock Provisioning

October 17, 2011 02:00 PM
EMC's Ionix UIM/Provisioning software is getting a facelift for the VCE Vblock platform. The Virtual Computing Environment coalition of Cisco, EMC and VMware is targeting the data center with pre-packaged, pre-validated solutions that combine virtualization, networking, computing, storage, security and management technologies called Vblocks. Unified Infrastructure Manager 3.0, which will ship early next month, is software designed to simplify the transition from physical to virtual to private cloud infrastructures.

Dell Unwraps First Ocarina-Based Storage Offering

October 13, 2011 11:30 AM
In the not-so-distant past, Dell's storage revenues primarily consisted of EMC commissions, which at a reported $1.29 billion in 2008 were nothing to sneer at. Fast forward to today after the acquisitions of companies like Compellent and EqualLogic, and the company's own intellectual property now represents nearly 80% of its storage revenues and more than 90 percent of its storage profits. Dell is now looking to leverage another acquisition, Ocarina Network (data compression and deduplication software), to drive its storage sales even higher.

EMC Unveils New Proven Solution And Best Practices For Oracle

October 03, 2011 11:16 AM
At Oracle OpenWorld today, EMC Corporation announced a new EMC Proven Solution, as well as a best practices white paper developed by EMC IT that can help dramatically improve Oracle customers' database performance and accelerate their journey to the cloud. Based on EMC VNX unified storage and using EMC FAST Cache, an extendable cache with up to 4TB of Flash drives that automatically responds to busy workloads, the new EMC Proven Oracle Performance Solution can double Oracle transactions per minute with up to 80% faster response times, while generating up to 170% more IOPS in both physical and virtualized Oracle Database 11g RAC environments. It maps out a logical approach to combine EMC VNX unified storage with Oracle's Direct NFS feature to increase performance of Oracle databases on both physical and virtual machines.

The Acquisition Square Dance Continues

September 21, 2011 08:51 AM
This week’s acquisition of high-end NAS vendor and long-time OEM supplier BlueArc has me thinking about how various tech companies do acquisitions and how those acquisitions affect the products we put in our data centers. As my linear algebra professor used to say, it should be obvious to even the most casual observer that companies handle acquisitions differently.

September 19, 2011 03:20 PM
Iomega, an EMC company and an innovator in data storage solutions for small and medium businesses, today announced leading edge video surveillance storage management solutions utilizing cost-effective Iomega StorCenter network storage devices that provide superior yet economical local and cloud video surveillance solutions for SMBs and distributed enterprises.

Iomega Raises Bar For SMB, ROBO Storage

August 24, 2011 08:10 AM
EMC's Iomega is replacing its top-end StorCenter ix12-300r with the StorCenter px12-350r Network Storage Array, which starts at less than $6,000, with up to 36 Tbytes of storage for under $10,500. Featuring Intel Core2 Duo Processors; 7,200 RPM hard drives; optional solid state drives; VMware, Citrix and Windows certifications; Hyper-V live migration support; and deduplicating backup with EMC Avamar, the 2U rackmount NAS px12-350r comes in two base configurations: four 2 Tbyte drives and four 3 Tbyte drives.

EMC Introduces Multipurpose Tape Alternative

August 08, 2011 01:30 PM
With declarations of the death of tape celebrating their 50th anniversary, disk-storage leader EMC is unveiling its first integrated solution for all mainframe tape use cases. While the company admits that the belief that tape is dead is probably never going to be true, it says the challenges with tape are real and that the tape market will continue to shrink as it evolves to satisfy very specific workloads, like long-term archival storage.

EMC VMAXe Is A Scaled-Down Version Of VMAX For Cloud Storage

July 18, 2011 08:31 AM
Storage vendor EMC has introduced the VMAXe storage architecture platform for its Symmetric line of storage systems. VMAXe is a smaller-footprint version of EMC's existing VMAX architecture for virtual cloud and mission-critical IT environments. VMAXe, which stands for Virtual Matrix Architecture, offers easier installation, configuration and management, and is targeted at smaller enterprises that may have limited storage expertise on their IT staffs.
