Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Kaminario’s K2 Climbs the SSD Storage Performance Mountain

March 09, 2012 09:00 AM
One of the most exciting development areas for the ICT (information and communications technology) industry is in the attempt to address the I/O gap challenge, whereby servers are often frustrated in their attempts to read and write data as fast as they would like from traditional storage. Various approaches using solid-state devices (SSDs) are targeting the problem. Innumerable smaller companies have been attempting to address the I/O gap, and more recently large IT vendors--notably, EMC with its VFCache and IBM with SSD caching for its XIV storage systems--have been joining the fray. The smaller vendors want to shout out, "Don’t forget about us!" Many of those companies are worth paying attention to, including Kaminario, which has a clear and solid vision.

HireRight Data Center Refresh Ups Performance 50%, Cuts Power 45%, Footage 60%

March 02, 2012 09:30 AM
HireRight--a provider of cloud-based, on-demand employment screening programs--in collaboration with Cisco and EMC has implemented green technology while launching a refresh to its data center infrastructure. The company says the new deployment increases performance by 50%, decreases power consumption by 45% and reduces data center square footage by 60%.

The Five Core Tenets of Scale-Out NAS

March 02, 2012 09:00 AM
Deploying a scalable NAS system takes more than just buying the right equipment; it takes a plan, and that plan has to have a solid foundation based on principles surrounding what a NAS should and should not do.

Two More Stealthy Solid-State Storage Startups

March 01, 2012 09:00 AM
My last post discussed, or at least mentioned, all the startups, and re-startups, building storage systems designed around flash memory that have made public announcements. Most startups spend the time they're developing Version 1.0 of their products in stealth mode so they can pop up fully formed like Athena from the skull of Zeus. We at DeepStorage have developed our own startup detection system that ferrets out those flying under the radar. In this column we'll look at a pair of stealth startups: XtremIO and Proximal Data.

SSD, Scale-Out Architecture To Grow

February 29, 2012 01:00 PM
As SSD capacity continues to increase and prices drop, use of SSD for enterprise Tier 1 applications is going to become more and more common. At the same time, enterprises are adopting scale-out architectures. It's an exciting time to be involved in enterprise storage.

RSA Chief Tells Enterprises: Make Security And Privacy Protection Top Priorities

February 29, 2012 11:00 AM
While RSA, EMC's security division, has acknowledged it has a lot of work to do to repair its reputation after the 2011 hack attack that exposed information on 77 million customer accounts, the company says a new study shows a troubling lack of attention to security and privacy risks among directors and top executives at Global 2000 companies. Presented at the RSA Conference 2012 in San Francisco, the study calls for companies to "establish a tone from the top" to make security and privacy protection top priorities.

Solid State Drives New Wave of Storage System Startups

February 28, 2012 09:00 AM
It was just last year that many of us in the storage chattering class were talking about how the market for mainline storage systems had consolidated after 3Par and Compellent were swallowed up by HP and Dell, respectively, leaving the market with just one or two smaller vendors to keep the big boys honest. That discussion failed to recognize that solid state storage had made the transition to the mainstream, and that there was a new wave of startups building storage systems optimized for flash.

EMC VFCache: Project Lightning Strikes

February 13, 2012 09:00 AM
EMC's recent announcement of the culmination of the code-named Project Lightning resulted in the new VFCache solution, a server-based flash cache, which may be used as a complement or alternative to flash storage that appears as if it were a disk drive. This lightning strikes twice, though not in the same spot. The first is dramatically improved I/O performance for customers and the second is the challenge that VFCache brings to competitors trying to distinguish their own flash storage solutions.

EMC's Lightning Strikes

February 07, 2012 09:00 AM
The storage cognoscenti have been all atwitter this morning as EMC announces the details of Project Lightning, the flash-based server cache solution it previewed last May at EMCworld. The first version of the renamed VFCache is now available, and it's clearly a version 1.0 product. Hopefully, EMC will get some of the road map items out the door, as well as the just announced Thunder, soon.

EMC Delivers On Server-Based Flash Storage

February 06, 2012 09:00 AM
Originally unveiled last May and scheduled to ship in 2011, EMC's PCIe/flash-based server cache technology, code-named Project Lightning, is now available under the name of VFCache. The enterprise storage giant has been the leader in enterprise flash drive capacity since entering this market in 2008, shipping more than 24 petabytes in 2011, an eight times increase in customer shipments since 2009, says Mark Sorenson, senior VP and general manager of EMC's Flash Business Unit.
