Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

A Network Computing Webinar:
SDN First Steps

Thursday, August 8, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

This webinar will help attendees understand the overall concept of SDN and its benefits, describe the different conceptual approaches to SDN, and examine the various technologies, both proprietary and open source, that are emerging. It will also help users decide whether SDN makes sense in their environment, and outline the first steps IT can take for testing SDN technologies.

Putting The Catalyst 6500 In Its Place

July 12, 2010 11:00 AM
The 6500 is a workhorse in the core and the data center. Network admins love to hate it and hate to love it. The variety of blades that can be inserted for in switch processing makes the platform applicable to many different network requirements. It's also an old platform and is getting pretty long in the tooth. With a paltry 80Gbps (full duplex) interconnect to the back plane, the 6500 simply isn't suited to stand as a next generation core data center switch. It's time to start thinking about putting it out to data center/LAN edge or as a core campus switch. Fortunately, you will have options for replacing the data center network. While I had this thought circulating in my head for awhile now, a blog Cisco's Rip and Replace Dilemma from Stuart Miniman at Wikibon, a follow-up by John furrier at Silicon Angle, and then a response by Steve Schuchart with Current Analysis prompted me to chime in. They are pretty smart characters, but I think I might be able to add something to the discussion.

Tennesee Tech University Gets An IT Facelift

July 06, 2010 10:09 AM
Jerry Boyd, assistant director of network services, had $10 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), also known as stimulus funding, to do a wholesale infrastructure upgrade at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville. While he could have taken the easy way out and used the university's existing contracts to upgrade the equipment, he went to the trouble of evaluating his needs, wrote Requests for Proposals and Requests for Quotes, and operated through a bid process, which he believes got the university more of what it needed rather than settling for what it could get under contract.

Brocade CNAs: Superior Real-World Performance | Easy Migration

July 01, 2010 08:00 AM
Brocade Communications serves the data center, which means the company is a high-performance networking company. Brocade is also still the new kid in town when it comes to network adapters. This means they can't be just as good as the competition, they have to be better. So the company set out to prove their Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) are the fastest, but first they had to choose one of two methodologies.

Brocade 10GbE Converged Network Adapters Outpace Competition

June 29, 2010 09:52 AM
Brocade today announced that the Brocade 1000-series Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) lead the industry with the highest input/output operations per second (IOPS) and throughput performance, surpassing the closest competitive offerings by up to 131 percent, according to independent third-party tests.

Extreme Makeover Network Edition

June 25, 2010 09:00 AM
Extreme Networks is a company with a history of delivering high-performance, high-availability Ethernet switching technology. The company's very first product won Best of Show award at Networld+Interop, and by 2001 Extreme had won the award five consecutive years with one innovative 1Gb product after another. In 2002, the company introduced its BlackDiamond modular switches featuring leading-edge 10Gb technology. By 2002, annual revenues for Extreme rocketed to over $400 million. Between 2002 and 2009, the competition for Gigabit Ethernet stiffened as the technology commoditized, and a mass migration to 10Gb never materialized. Then, after being stuck in neutral between $300 and $400 million, the company underwent an extreme makeover in 2009.

HP BladeSystem G7 LOM: A Milestone For Converged Networks

June 24, 2010 01:00 PM
Converged networking is not an event. It's a continuous process that will unfold over many years. Seamless to customers, none of its many parts noticeably different from each other, but from the beginning and end, they are very different from each other. Within this continuum are milestones that stand-out because achieving them is required for convergence to succeed. One such milestone is the monumental decision by server vendors to embed a converged networking chip on their motherboards, a.k.a. LAN-on-Motherboard, a.k.a. LOM.

Brocade Ups HP's StorageWorks

June 24, 2010 09:00 AM
Storage networking success depends largely on the SAN vendor's ability to partner with server vendors and VARs. Brocade, the touted leader in SAN switching according to Infonetics (followed by Cisco), is deepening it partnership with HP supplying 8Gbps HBAs for HP servers and extending virtualization features into virtual machines. The two companies are also offering a SAN starter kit to boost companies starting out with storage networking. While virtualization is established technology, the capability to architect dynamic data centers leveraging virtualization is only on the horizon.

Brocade Continues to Drive Innovation For Next-Generation Data Centers with HP

June 23, 2010 09:03 AM
Brocade today announced a set of innovative HP-branded Brocade 8 Gbps Fibre Channel data center and server connectivity products and a virtualization solution bundle. The new offerings extend the Brocade storage area network (SAN) and server connectivity portfolio delivered by HP. The solutions, which work with HP's industry-leading BladeSystem platform, help provide thousands of data center customers globally with highly scalable and reliable access to data in mission-critical environments. Brocade also announced that the companies have achieved a record-breaking milestone by shipping over seven million HP StorageWorks B-series Fibre Channel ports to date.

Emulex and ServerEngines Finally Wed

June 08, 2010 02:05 PM
As far as I know, there are no statistics for unmarried corporate partners, but Emulex and ServerEngines announced on June 7 they would join the 55% of couples that marry within 5 years of cohabitation and finally wed. It's easy to see why after test driving the car for only two years, that Emulex decided the performance of ServerEngines technology was outstanding and acquired the company.

Force10's Deep Buffer Switch

June 03, 2010 09:00 AM
Force10's new S60 to of rack switch demonstrates that with all the buzz around 10Gb Ethernet, 1Gb still has some legs in the data center. Enterprise IT is still buying servers with 1 or more Gb NICs on the motherboard. Until 10Gb LAN on motherboards is the norm, which will drive 10Gb pricing downward, Gb will be here to stay. There isn't much that is earth-shattering about the S60, but is a welcome addition for Force10's existing customers.
