Computer network equipment maker Brocade is introducing a first-to-market line of 16Gbps Fibre Channel switches and other equipment as it contends that Fibre Channel is going to be the dominant switching technology in cloud environments. The product announcements continue Brocade's strategy of developing Ethernet fabric networks for optimum performance, resiliency and efficiency. Last June, the industry embraced the introduction of the Brocade One architecture, VCS technology and VDX switches--which for the first time brought to life a new fabric network design for flatter scale-out in virtualized clouds. Analyst reports, press articles and the blogosphere are full of commentary about new fabric architectures from Brocade, Cisco and Juniper, that are designed for flatter scale-out in virtualized clouds, LAN/SAN convergence and 40/100Gbs performance. Brocade was the first to introduce this class of fabric with the unveiling of its Brocade One architecture, VCS technology and VDX switches in June of 2010. Force 10 is the latest networking vendor to announce a comprehensive vision for data center networking. Dubbed Open Cloud Networking, the idea is to use standard protocols to interconnect networking gear paired with their Open Automation capabilities, and offer integration and interoperation with network management and systems orchestration management servers. The company's announcement includes additional automation features and new hardware to support the vision. Do you need multi-path Ethernet in the data center using TRILL, Shortest Path Bridging (SPB), Cisco's FabricPath or Brocade's VCS in order to maximize network efficiency and reduce congestion? Probably not, unless you manage a very big data center with servers and access ports running into the tens of thousands. If you have less than 5,000 access ports in your data center, you can probably avoid routing Ethernet frames and use your vendor's multi-chassis link aggregation (MLAG) product-set to interconnect the access in an active/active design. Juniper finally got to 1 in its 3-2-1 strategy launched last year. The trend, to flatten the network, has been coming for a while. What's held back the flattening are little things, like being able to aggregate enough access ports over a high capacity and low latency interconnects, broadcast control, traffic management and, frankly, a strong driver to re-architect the network. But that hasn't stopped Brocade, Cisco and Juniper from coming out with some innovative data center network offerings. FCoE may not be the slam-dunk portrayed by some analysts and vendors, but I'm confident an "everything over Ethernet" approach is the right one for the next generation of enterprise data centers. It's hard to argue with commodity pricing, solid 10Gbit performance, backward-compatible connectivity and network-enabled flexibility.
