Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

Network Buyers Survey: Standards Trump Features

January 11, 2012 09:00 AM
When it comes to buying new network equipment, enterprise customers prefer technology built to industry standards over products that may have innovative, but proprietary, features, a newly released survey shows. Although network vendors, including industry leader Cisco Systems, are introducing innovations such as 40 Gbit Ethernet connectivity, multipath schemes such as fabric networks and converged Fibre Channel and Ethernet, buyers ranked 'adherence to industry standards' as their highest priority in choosing a vendor.

Survey: Cisco's Network Domination At Risk

January 10, 2012 10:23 AM
Cisco Systems’ dominance of the networking technology space remains strong but it will have to work harder to keep it that way, according to a recently released survey of IT professionals. Increasingly, the people who buy networking equipment are considering other vendors, such as Dell, HP or IBM, as an alternative to Cisco. In addition, while Cisco is known for its networking innovations, customers prize technology that adheres to common industry standards over products offering unique features.

Brocade Claims World's Largest 100GbE Deployment

November 15, 2011 11:30 AM
Brocade is claiming the world's largest single-site deployment of 100 Gbit Ethernet in a research institute, improving efficiency by 50%. Janelia Farm Research Campus, the research facility for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), has chosen Brocade to replace its network infrastructure and increase performance by up to 10 times.

Brocade Scores An 'A' In Enterprise Campus Networking

November 08, 2011 11:30 AM
Brocade is looking to shake up enterprise campus networking with a set of solutions that will deliver a 35% TCO advantage. Due out this month with a starting price of $5,595, the ICX 6610 is an Ethernet access switch that combines chassis-like reliability and performance with the flexibility and affordability of a stackable switch, says the company/ The solution delivers five times the stacking bandwidth of the leading competitor and provides 8-by-10 Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports and the highest aggregation bandwidth in its class.

Proprietary Networking Kills Opportunity

September 23, 2011 07:00 AM
When we ask IT about proprietary vs. standards-based purchases, the majority of responses indicate that standards are nearly always preferred. So why are the network fabrics proprietary? There is a disconnect between what we are hearing from IT and what vendors are offering, and it seems to me that vendors are collectively shooting themselves in the foot.

Assessment: Brocade Network Subscription

September 01, 2011 09:00 AM
Network Subscription is an acquisition model that lets companies pay for network ports when they are used. As monthly demand changes, the port count and costs rise and fall. This is a good model for companies with large differences between normal and peak usage, though subscribers pay more over time compared with a capital purchase. It is not a fit for companies with small variations in demand. Network Subscription doesn't include Fibre Channel ports. .

Brocade Announces Network Subscription And VDX Switches At VMworld

August 30, 2011 02:15 PM
Brocade’s Network Subscription, new switches and Network Advisor enhancements are all aimed at establishing Brocade as a data and storage player in cloud infrastructure. Network Subscription brings flexible, on-demand costs to networking—as flexible as installing hardware can be—where enterprises only pay for the ports they need when they need them. The new VDX switches offer more options for Brocade's Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS), while Network Advisor catches up with competitors' offerings by enhancing integration with VMware’s vSphere.

FCoE: Standards Don't Matter; Vendor Choice Does

July 27, 2011 08:30 AM
During the last year or so, some Fibre Channel over Ethernet experts have been arguing nuances of FCoE and which protocols you need or don’t need. FCoE interswitch interoperability? I will be old(er) and gray(er) before that happens in any meaningful way. While these are interesting discussions—if you go for that sort of thing—ultimately, they won’t impact your purchasing decisions. You are going to use whatever your SAN vendor tells you to use.

Proprietary Is Not A Four Letter Word

June 22, 2011 07:00 AM
Proprietary technologies are not inherently bad, but you do have to watch for vendors that interchange standards-based features with proprietary features in a fanciful shell game.

Calling It: Dell Acquires Brocade

June 02, 2011 10:30 AM
A Canaccord Adams report, "Dell Looks Poised for a Networking Move," seems to have merit, and industry insiders are claiming to have heard about the deal. The company is dramatically cutting expenses, and the Dell Storage Forum is going on next week, a perfect venue to announce the acquisition.
