When it comes to buying new network equipment, enterprise customers prefer technology built to industry standards over products that may have innovative, but proprietary, features, a newly released survey shows. Cisco Systems’ dominance of the networking technology space remains strong but it will have to work harder to keep it that way, according to a recently released survey of IT professionals. Increasingly, the people who buy networking equipment are considering other vendors, such as Dell, HP or IBM, as an alternative to Cisco. Brocade is claiming the world's largest single-site deployment of 100 Gbit Ethernet in a research institute, improving efficiency by 50%. When we ask IT about proprietary vs. standards-based purchases, the majority of responses indicate that standards are nearly always preferred. So why are the network fabrics proprietary? Network Subscription is an acquisition model that lets companies pay for network ports when they are used. As monthly demand changes, the port count and costs rise and fall. This is a good model for companies with large differences between normal and peak usage, though subscribers pay more over time compared with a capital purchase. During the last year or so, some Fibre Channel over Ethernet experts have been arguing nuances of FCoE and which protocols you need or don’t need. FCoE interswitch interoperability? I will be old(er) and gray(er) before that happens in any meaningful way. While these are interesting discussions—if you go for that sort of thing—ultimately, they won’t impact your purchasing decisions. Proprietary technologies are not inherently bad, but you do have to watch for vendors that interchange standards-based features with proprietary features in a fanciful shell game.Calling It: Dell Acquires Brocade
