Primary Data and Coho Data garner substantial financing, but software-defined storage remains more hype than reality.
The huge performance provided by all-flash arrays is a boon for virtual desktop infrastructure, but don't be fooled by unrealistic calculations.
If you're looking at a converged platform as a way to increase data center efficiency, here are three factors to keep in mind.
With the arrival of faster networks and SSDs, RAID can no longer keep up. Data protection alternatives such as replication and erasure codes are gaining traction.
Move over SAS and SATA. A new standard ramps up SSD performance with a radical new approach to storage I/O handling.
The SDDC is poised to bring revolutionary changes by providing flexibility to data center storage, switching, security and other infrastructure components.
In order to handle the growing traffic deluge, data centers need to leverage open infrastructure, software-defined technologies, and automation.

The Best of Interop Awards recognize innovative hardware and software that represent technological advancement in a specific category. The Interop judging team poured through 129 submissions in nine categories, including networking, mobility, and security. This year we chose to mix this up a little by creating a separate storage category and adding a whole new SDN category. Awards were also presented for Grand Award winner, Best Startup, and Audience Choice. See who took home the prize this year!

Today's data centers are essentially the same: long rows of metal racks stocked with machines, miles of cable, and elaborate cooling systems. But just because we build data centers this way in 2013 doesn't mean that's how it will be in ten, twenty or fifty years. Here's a few glimpses of what the future might hold, from printable electronics to nanotube processors to nuclear batteries.
