Three Chip Vendors Bet On Wi-Fi Boom: Page 2 of 2

According to Cates, video needs to be unwired and the only way to do that effectively is to migrate to the higher data rates (200 Mbits/second) and greater home coverage that the MtW8150 will allow. The transceiver is available now.

For voice-over-Internet Protocol applications, SyChip Inc. (Plano, Texas) is rolling out the VWLAN7100 Wi-Fi module, including RF, baseband, MAC and full VoIP protocol stack. Known for its GPS expertise, the company has also manufactured some WLAN subsystems, but this is its first all-out jump into Wi-Fi.

The module is 802.11b/g compliant and is priced at less than $20 each in 10,000-unit quantities, said Asom. It is sampling today and is scheduled for production by year's end.
