All routing protocols RIP,EIGRP,OSPF,IS-IS, BGP select best path, it is not related only with OSPF.


Also MPLS can run with all of them. This is again not true. In this article series I only tried to explain MPLS Traffic engineering which is only one of the application out of many can be done by link state protocols dynamically. Although EIGRP can support MPLS Traffic Engineering somehow with Verbatim feature but it is another articles subject.

 

Also I do not agree that majority of Service Providers use for their IGP as OSPF, IS-IS especially better fits for flat IGP deployments than OSPF. This is again design choices and there are many criteria to choose one IGP rather than other such as manageability,fast convergence,extendebility,interaction with the other protocols,which one is fit for the business requirements so on. There are really many criteria so It is also not correct to say one protocol is better than other. If it was true We could have only that protocol.

I have majorly seen MPLS TE in Telecom network which use or can say recommend OSPF. They claim best path selection or MPLS support can only be done by OSPF.

Correct. Only EIGRP has support delay, relibality so on rather than only interface bandwitch/cumulative bandwith calculation. The idea was to support traffic engineering in the protocol itself without need other complex control plane protocol but actually it  has not been implemented.


Thus in the environment which realy need to have Traffic Engineering capability like Service Providers , you either see OSPF , but even more IS-IS. I would kindly recommend you to follow other upcoming parts of this series and hope to help someone.

@Orhan, Thanks Orhan for putting up this blog in simple words, the most impressive part i found in your blog was its three major uses. A MPLS learning engineer can easily understand why we use OSPF to run MPLS. These routing protocols are designed to find the shortest path through the network, and do not consider other factors, such as latency or traffic congestion.
