Novatel Completes 4G LTE Call

Novatel Wireless said it has successfully completed a data transmission call using Long Term Evolution 4G technology.

The firm didn't reveal the specifications of the call, but noted that LTE provides high data rates of up to 100 Mbps on the uplink and 50 Mbps on the downlink. The firm, which provides a family of mobile hotspot products, noted that it is working with operators planning to launch LTE commercial data devices later this year.

"We are pleased to achieve these important first data transmission milestones on next-generation technologies last week with dual carrier HSPA+ and now with LTE," said Slim Souissi, Novatel Wireless CTO, in a statement. "We believe our aggressive development efforts will enable us to deliver these innovative solutions with the fastest possible time to market."

Last month, Novatel said it completed a data transmission over dual-carrier HSPA+ using Qualcomm's MDM8220 chipset. At the time, Novatel said it planned to offer commercial data devices based on the Qualcomm chipset in the second half of this year.

Verizon Wireless has said it expects to launch LTE in 25 to 30 markets in the United States later this year. The carrier, which is jointly owned by Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group, is currently testing the ultra high-speed network technology in the Boston and Seattle areas. The service is expected to debut initially with data cards being offered to consumers, although handsets are also under development. Novatel, which offers products for use on global carrier networks, noted that many international carriers plan to overlay LTE on their 3G networks.

LTE cards and USB dongles are possible extensions to Novatel's current lineup of products. The company already offers a line of MiFi hotspot products.
