New Regulations Will Affect VoIP Operations, Deployment

In a separate ruling, the FCC will require VoIP providers that link to the public telephone network to make their systems wiretap-ready. There are some legal questions as to whether the FCC can make such a requirement, but they are academic. VoIP will be wiretapped, and wiretaps help catch criminals. As the country moves toward a VoIP-centric public phone system, regulatory agencies aren't going to let those criminals get away. Some folks don't want law enforcement agencies to have wiretap capabilities at all, but this isn't practical--these agencies should retain that power, as long as they follow strict guidelines and are required to obtain search warrants.
