While not as much of a game-changer as its acquisition of Whiptail, Cisco's $2.7 billion purchase of IDS specialist Sourcefire was big news in the security space. The move bolsters Cisco's position in network security, which some experts saw as faltering, but raised questions of product overlap. The deal also extended Cisco's efforts in open source; the company promised to keep the open source IDS Snort, created by Sourcefire's founder, free.
