Demonstrating that merchant silicon can still upend the switching market, PLX will be showing off its Best of Interop finalist TeraPHY TN8045. Squeezing a quad-port 10GBASE-T (copper) PHY and a 10GBase-KR backplane interface to an Ethernet switch or Mac device into a low-cost ($82), high-density (25x25mm) package means the TeraPHY is destined to bring on a new generation of inexpensive 10-gigabit switches and multi-port interface cards. Pairing PLX's third-generation PHY design with a 40-nm ASIC process, the TN8045 includes enhanced Energy Efficient Ethernet (eEEE) support, on-chip MACSec security and encryption hardware, and a comprehensive suite of electromagnetic interference (EMI) mitigation hardware.
