There's one obvious problem with this: Right now, most of us
aren't running VMs on our desktops, and even most of the
virtualization vendors seem focused on servers. However, all the
hardware-assisted virtualization technology that Intel and AMD build
into their server chips also is going into desktops (and laptops),
even it isn't used at present, while application
virtualization
has attracted a growing following. Most vendors
already implement their own ways to share data, with app virtualization preserving functionality like the clipboard. So it's probably inevitable that virtualization will migrate to the desktop, even if Web services might not.
