The Clear Modem with Wi-Fi is now available from Clearwire and offers the carrier's 4G service without having to purchase a router.
The Clear modem with Wi-Fi provides secure connectivity and combines the modem and Wi-Fi router in one device to save money and space, Clear said. The device is based on the Beeceem BCS5250 WiMax chip and has an integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi router that is also compatible with 902.11b/g. It supports Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista 32/64, Windows 7 32/64 and Mac OS8 or higher. Clear's 4G network has average mobile download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps, with bursts over 10 mbps, for streaming movies and playing online games, the carrier said.
"Now our customers can get broadband Wi-Fi Internet throughout their house, with one simple device about the size of a book -- and without a rat's nest of wires," said Mike Sievert, chief commercial officer at Clearwire, in a statement. "Our new Clear Modem with Wi-Fi makes it easier than ever to connect the Wi-Fi devices that customers already have at home, such as laptops and desktops, tablets, iPods, and smartphones, without needing a wired connection to the cable or phone company."
Nearly 70 devices are available to connect to Clear's 4G network, the carrier said. The Wi-Fi modem can be purchased from Clear and authorized dealers for $120 with a two-year contract or month-to-month plan. Users can also opt to lease the modem for $7 per month if they sign up for a two-year plan. Monthly service plans start at $35 per month.
Clear's 4G service is available in 68 markets across the United States. By the end of the year, Clear's 4G service will be available in other metropolitan areas including Denver and the San Francisco Bay area.
