ADTRAN Expands Fiber-to-the-Premises Portfolio With Advanced Active Ethernet Solutions

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.(BUSINESS WIRE) ADTRAN, Inc., a leading provider of next-generation networking solutions, today announced the addition of a portfolio of advanced Active Ethernet solutions to its Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) offering. The Active Ethernet solutions include a new Total Access 5000 Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and an enhanced suite of new Total Access 300 Series Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). Active Ethernet is the latest addition to the broad portfolio of capabilities offered by the Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform (MSAP) and allows customers to take advantage of a point-to-point fiber infrastructure to provide up to 1Gigabit per second (Gbps) bidirectional bandwidth per subscriber.

Along with ADTRAN's widely deployed GPON technology, these Active Ethernet-based products bring additional end-to-end solutions for residential, business, and mobile backhaul applications to market. Active Ethernet is a point-to-point technology that provides services up to 1 Gbps to every customer on a direct fiber connection that scales to support long-reach applications from Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics enabling services to be deployed over a single fiber or a pair of fibers at distances of 10, 20, 40 or 80 km. With up to 40 Gbps for the network interface, the Total Access 5000 is uniquely able to remove the bandwidth barriers of any Active Ethernet deployment. This allows service providers to rest assured that they can meet customer service demands on an all-fiber network both now and in the future. The Total Access 5000 24-port Active Ethernet OLT uses a simplified provisioning model and is fully integrated into the Total Access Element Management System (EMS) for plug-and-play operation, ease of troubleshooting, and complete performance monitoring.

"We want to offer our customers the most bandwidth possible from our fiber deployments and the Total Access 5000 Active Ethernet solution does just that. We are expanding services into many unserved and underserved areas. ADTRAN's Total Access 5000 Active Ethernet solution provides 10GigE uplinks and transport, enabling us to address voice, video and data needs for residential and business customers from a single chassis," said Bill Knoop, plant manager, OmniTel. "We evaluated all the solutions on the market and selected the ADTRAN Total Access 5000. With an industry-leading warranty on a redundant, industry-proven, carrier-class chassis, ADTRAN was an easy choice."

Expanding the Total Access 300 product line are three new Active Ethernet Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) for residential and business applications.
    * The Total Access 324E indoor ONT offers two POTS interfaces, four 10/100/1000 Ethernet interfaces and a SFP-based network connection
    * The Total Access 354E Single Family Unit (SFU) outdoor ONT offers two POTS interfaces, four 10/100/1000 Ethernet interfaces and a SFP-based network connection in an outdoor enclosure
    * The Total Access 372E Small Business Unit (SBU) outdoor ONT includes eight POTS ports, four DS1 circuit emulated T1 interfaces and two 10/100/1000 Ethernet interfaces with a SFP-based network connection in an outdoor enclosure

Each ONT is uniquely positioned to enable service providers to successfully deploy broadband services to meet the continuous need for increased bandwidth to the end user. Like all ADTRAN ONTs, these new Active Ethernet ONTs are based on the ADTRAN Operating System (AOS) and offer industry-leading SIP and MGCP interoperability, GR-303, as well as advanced trouble-shooting capabilities.
