An overloaded bandwidth condition is present on a certain segment. Thoroughly check the router for any incorrect configuration parameters that can control the amount of traffic to be forwarded to another segment. Check for proper Spanning Tree Algorithm and router-to-router communication settings. Are any incorrect configuration parameters present in the router? Take the necessary action to resolve the problem and retest the router for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step. Check the source network segment-routing problems related to destination address settings in certain Ethernet station nodes. Keep in mind that a particular Ethernet station node can have a software-application configuration problem. At times, this issue can cause a constant transmission to a certain Ethernet network segment. Did examining the segment locate any specific address problems with a certain Ethernet station node's routing transfers? Take the necessary action to resolve the problems with the respective Ethernet station node's routing parameters and then retest the router for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step. Attempt to gather more conclusive fault-isolation data by doing a protocol analysis . Look closely at the percentage of frames being forwarded that are overloading the destination segment with traffic to see if they are related to a specific node or process. There may be an unneeded broadcast. Check for Spanning Tree Algorithm and router-to-router settings. The bridge may be forwarding extra packets because of looping data in the internetwork. These issues can cause an Ethernet internetwork broadcast storm. If after using these procedures you cannot conclusively locate the problem, and you continue to find failure symptoms that point to a router problem, refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
