Only partial data traffic can pass across the router.

Thoroughly check the software and hardware configuration of the router.

Determine whether there are any configuration parameters present in the router's network-to-address routing table, with regard to the specific network address of a node's packet, which are not properly being passed to the destination segment.

Are any incorrect configuration parameters present in the router?

Take the necessary action to resolve the problem and retest the router for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step.

Check the segment for address problems with certain Ethernet station nodes, specifically, file-server routing update tables. Thoroughly examine the routing tables in a file server for addressing updates that are different from the router that has the problem. The router and the file server may have an address conflict.

Keep in mind that a particular Ethernet station node or file server can have a software router-update configuration problem in relation to the network addresses to which it is directly transmitting.

Did examining the network addressing locate any specific problems with a certain Ethernet station node's or file server's routing update tables?

Take the necessary action to resolve the network addressing problems with the respective Ethernet station node's or file server's parameters; then retest the router for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step.

Attempt to gather more conclusive fault-isolation data by thoroughly examining the routing transfer between Ethernet nodes and segments by performing a protocol analysis .

If after doing the protocol analysis you cannot conclusively locate the problem, and you continue to find failure symptoms that point to a router problem, refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
