An overloaded bandwidth condition is present on a certain segment.

Thoroughly check the bridge for any incorrect configuration parameters that can control the amount of traffic to be forwarded to another segment.

Check for proper address filter settings. Also check for Spanning Tree Algorithm settings; the bridge might be forwarding extra packets because of looping data in the internetwork.

Are any incorrect configuration parameters present in the bridge?

Take the necessary action to resolve the problem and retest the bridge for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step.

Check the bridge address tables for problems with certain Ethernet station node- location mismatches. Keep in mind that a particular Ethernet station node can have a software application-configuration problem in relation to the destination network to which it is directly transmitting. Sometimes the proper network may not be referenced from the node.

Did examining the bridge address table locate any specific problems with a certain Ethernet station node's addressing?

Take the necessary action to resolve the addressing with the respective Ethernet station node's parameters; then retest the bridge for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step.

Attempt to gather more conclusive fault-isolation data by performing a protocol analysis session.

When performing a protocol analysis session on an attempted bridge transfer across segments, check for any excessive broadcast storms coming from the bridge. A bridge may be transmitting extra or excessive packets to locate a network. This usually is caused by a configuration or software revision problem with the bridge or multiple bridges in an Ethernet internetwork.

If after using these procedures you cannot conclusively locate the problem, and you continue to find failure symptoms that point to a bridge problem, refer to the manufacturer's instructions.
