A suspected bad repeater or wiring hub module
is causing failure symptoms with multiple users or the complete Ethernet
internetwork.
Regardless of whether the failure symptom is solid or intermittent, run
full manufacturer's diagnostics on the repeater or hub. Next, remove the
suspected bad repeater or wiring hub module and associated cabling sections
to other hubs or repeaters from the internetwork configuration and then
retest the internetwork operations.
Are the failure symptoms gone?
The respective repeater, wiring hub module or internetwork cabling section
has failed. Replace the removed unit and cables with another unit and cables.
Retest the new configuration. If no problems are encountered, record the
problem in the network maintenance and service log. If problems are still
present, go to the next step.
Even if your problem is now fixed, if you feel that one of the cabling
sections caused the problem, you can verify the problem by testing the internetwork
cabling run with a time domain reflectometer. If you want to further verify
the repeater or wiring hub failure, you can do so with any available manufacturer
diagnostics.
If
failure symptoms are still present, reinsert the original repeater or wiring
hub module and respective cables into the network configuration. Go to the
next step.
Have you troubleshot and verified the integrity of the main internetwork
cabling?
Again, run full diagnostics on the repeater or hub and engage a protocol
analysis session to gain more conclusive fault-isolation data by
