Maintenance and Service IssuesAs noted earlier, the implementation of an Internet connection will carry with it maintenance and service costs beyond the standard fees charged by your ISP. Some of these costs, including software and hardware maintenance fees for network routers and CSU/DSUs are fairly obvious. Others may not be so obvious. Once you've installed an Internet connection, you are likely to experience significant additional network support costs. If your LAN does not currently support TCP/IP, you will have to install appropriate software to allow user access. In addition, you'll need to provide adequate training and support for those users if you expect them to derive significant benefits from the network capabilities. You may need to implement an SMTP gateway on your existing e-mail system or you may choose to replace that system with an Internet-oriented e-mail system. If you are planning to implement a Web server, you'll need to factor in costs for hardware, systems administration and development of Web pages. Needless to say, these costs can sometimes far exceed those paid to your ISP.
