MICROSOFT NT ENTERPRISE DESIGN
Microsoft NT Servers versus Domain Controllers
When constructing an enterprise solution advantages and disadvantages of
implementing domain controllers as file, print, and application servers
should be considered. It is important to remember that local groups on an
NT server or resource domain controller can contain users and global groups
from the master domains. By installing many NT servers as resource domain
controllers, adding a master domain user or global group to the resource
domain local group affects all resource file servers simultaneously. This
simplifies setup and administration of the resource file servers. The drawback
of having every server as a resource domain controller requires continuous
connections to controllers in the Domains that are trusted by this resource
domain. If special or separate security is required, the file or application
server can be installed as an NT Server instea
d of a resource domain controller,
so that the file server's local groups are specific to that server and special
permissioning can be applied.
