Building an ATM Wide Area Network

July 26, 1999
By David Willis

Interconnecting with Frame Relay
ATM networks may be easily connected to existing Frame Relay backbones through Frame Relay to ATM Service Interworking (FRATM). FRATM performs address translation and service mapping between the two technologies, including conversion from Frame Relay Multiprotocol Encapsulation (RFC 1490) to ATM Multiprotocol Encapsulation (RFC 1483) to ensure internetworking of upper-layer protocols.

Carriers can map PVCs from their Frame Relay to their ATM backbones, generally charging a minor premium for the service. Alternatively, your equipment can perform this translation. You should typically rely on the carrier to provide service interworking if you have a large frame relay network with a small ATM presence. But if you are further into the migration and have legacy frame relay equipment that is housed at an ATM-connected site, you're better off performing service interworking yourself.
