1. Main Symptom List




The main symptom list is the entry point for approaching procedures dealing with a specific network area or component. From the 14 main network failure symptom choices that follow, decide which one most closely relates to the failure symptom you have encountered in your particular network. Click on the symptom to go to the appropriate page. If for some reason you feel that your particular failure symptom is associated with a certain network component, you can at your discretion go directly to the respective page.

While deciding, also note if the failure symptom fits logically into one of the following network areas:
  • All network users
  • A group of network users
  • One network user

In addition, note whether the failure symptom is classified as solid or intermittent.

Main Network Failure Symptoms


1. A ring station, group of ring stations, or the complete network is ha nging or freezing. (Go to page 6.)

2. A ring station or group of ring stations cannot access any ring resources, such as the main network file server. (Go to page 4.)

3. The network is encountering a specific soft or hard error on the network. (Go to page 15.)

4. The network is experiencing any of the following failures: the whole network is operating slowly; a specific network application is operating slowly; or network log-on failures are occurring. (Go to page 15.)

5. You are having a problem accessing or using a particular application/group of applications, or certain directories/files, on the network file server. (Go to page 14.)

6. A particular network operating system feature or set of NOS features on the network file server is not working. (Go to page 14.)

7. A network peripheral cannot be used or accessed. (Go to page 10.)

8. A network printer or printers cannot be used or accessed. (Go to page 12.)

9. You are experiencing problems accessing or using a network server other than the main network file server, such as database, fax, communication, or print server. (Go to page 14.)

10. You are having a problem accessing or using other rings in an internetwork that are connected to the local ring through a bridge. (Go to page 7.)

11. You are having a problem accessing or using other rings in an internetwork that are connected to the local ring through a router. (Go to page 8.)

12. You are experiencing a problem accessing or using a host connection connected by means of a gateway on the local ring or a ring in an internetwork. (Go to page 13.)

13. The complete network is hanging or freezing, and the problem appears to be related to a repeater.

14. A network-sharable or non-sharable modem cannot be used/accessed, or there is a problem accessing the ring from a remote modem connection. (Go to page 11.)
