Great article, George. Agree with a lot of what you wrote, with one exception. The software layer to provide a scale-out data fabric is not widely available and is very challenging to develop. Only a couple of storage startups, Isilon being one, have successfully built scale-out storage systems and those assets are now residing in EMC. The new startups offering software-defined storage haven't proven the ability to scale-out to hundreds, if not thousands, of nodes. Nutanix ( is the only converged infrastructure vendor who has proven the ability to scale with its proprietary distributed file system inspired by GFS.
