Great article, George. Agree with a lot of what you wrote, with one exception. The software layer to provide a scale-out data fabric is not widely available and is very challenging to develop. Only a couple of storage startups, Isilon being one, have successfully built scale-out storage systems and those assets are now residing in EMC. The new startups offering software-defined storage haven't proven the ability to scale-out to hundreds, if not thousands, of nodes. Nutanix (www.nutanix.com) is the only converged infrastructure vendor who has proven the ability to scale with its proprietary distributed file system inspired by GFS.
