Its probably good to consider at some scale. To compare 500 server legacy infrastructure vs. virtualized shared storage infrastructure in terms of quantity and reliability etc. In my experience legacy 500 servers @ avg. 5 drives each = 2500 drives. app 100 hotspares. Virtual 500 servers on shared storage app. 100 drives. Legacy as was getting older started failing 2-3 drives a week with significant performance degradation for some systems and data risk as arrays rebuilt. 2500 vs. 100... 2500 drive * $200 = $500k which would more than buy a decent SAN now.
