Most organizations I work with want to transform their backup and recovery environment by moving away from tape. What I find is that tape best fulfills at least one or more of their data protection requirements. It's interesting how the the tides have turned - tape is now being viewed as a more reliable location for data vs. disk.

I agree with you when we're talking about storing and accessing fairly static data (or at least data where updates are mostly appends). For random read/write data, I can't see tape replacing disk. Now for sequentially accessed data, tape can scream.
