It will be interesting to see how the bare-metal switch strategy promoted by Big Switch and other SDN vendors develops. Having Dell support likely will be a big boost for enterprise acceptance.

Yes, Dell is making some pretty big moves into SDN, which is really interesting to watch. If they can get usable products into customers' hands, that will make a huge difference for both companies, OpenDaylight or no OpenDaylight.

Big Switch and Dell just announced a partnership where Dell will resell Big Switch's SwitchLight OS on two of its switches, along with a controller that runs the Big Tap application. It's a win for Big Switch, which seemed to take a hit when it walked away from the OpenDaylight project.

With so many different vendor strategies, enterprises have a challenging task in choosing which way to go. It's clear the SDN market has a long road ahead until things shake out. It can be easy to get caught up in the various approaches, but as Kurt pointed out in the first installment of the series, SDN vendors need to demonstrate business value above all.
