University of Wisconsin Lab
Here the Engineering School provides students with cutting edge software on Windows NT and HP-UX systems delivered over fast networking. Network Computing works with the department to improve their production environment and improve our test scenarios. The Wisconsin lab is responsible for many software and hardware tests, concentrating on Internet, database, infrastructure, and Novell NetWare systems.

Lab Description:

Architecture (infrastructure) of the lab:
  • ATM backbone using FORE systems Switches
  • Other hubs/repeaters: 3Com, Bay, Dayna, Asante, SMC 10bT and 100bT connections to client machines
  • Two separate links to the Engineering school FDDI backbone - 10bT via Cisco 7500 series router - 100bT via Cisco Catalyst 5000 switch
  • Frame relay connection to the other labs and the Internet

Number of servers and clients:
  • 20 Pentium, Pentium Pro, 486 and Macintosh clients
  • 6 Pentium and Pentium Pro, Macintosh servers
  • 5 UNIX servers (4 Sun, 1 HP)

  • DCOM for Solaris
  • ORBs (Object Request Brokers) and TP monitors (Transaction Processing) Domain Name Service

  • 15 NetWare 4.1x servers
  • 2 Windows NT servers
  • 200 Windows NT clients
  • 100 MacOS clients
  • 20 Solaris servers
  • 250 HP-UX clients
