Network Computing's Real-World Labs are unique among computer publications. Our labs are co-located on the sites of one large university, a Fortune 100 corporation, as well as bench-test lab facilities, which enables us to test products in real-world environments as well as in isolation. Our Real-World Lab sites are interconnected via frame relay, and we also have T-1 and ISDN, PRI, and BRI facilities. We run bench tests on virtually every product we evaluate.
How do I get a product tested for a feature or a review in Network Computing's Real-World Labs? Can I get a product tested privately in your Real-World Labs?
Check our editorial calendar for our published schedule of features at
2004 Editorial Calendar or you may contact Eileen Bellafiore, our East Coast Office Supervisor, for a faxed copy. We cover more products and reviews than are published on the calendar. CMP Media's independent test laboratory, NSTL, can also provide additional benchmarking and review services.
Lorna Garey is the key contact for features and reviews. Also send detailed product information to the editor covering that beat. We have a published beats list at /docs/beats.html or please contact Eileen Bellafiore for a faxed copy. Lorna can be reached via e-mail at lgarey@cmp.com. Eileen Bellafiore can be reached via e-mail at ebellafiore@cmp.com.
Please do not send us product without first talking to a section editor or a technology editor. We want to make sure the most current incarnation of the product is directed to the appropriate lab. We also want to make sure that it's returned when we're finished.
We do not test products privately in our Real-World Labs. All testing is conducted strictly for editorial purposes only.
Does Network Computing review pre-release or beta products?
Yes, a section called Sneak Previews is entirely dedicated to reviewing hot betas and newly released products. Our Sneak Previews profile products that we are very excited about. We provide a snapshot of what the product is like, but we do not do performance testing or complain about bad documentations, since we know that the product is a pre-release. We would like to work with you in advance on this section; we will sign non-disclosures. Please contact Patricia Thomas, our Associate Editor, at pthomas@cmp.com.
How do I submit proposals for articles?
We are always looking for good freelancers to work with us. If you've got an area of expertise and the time to do significant technical research in the networking area, please let us know. Our general request is that
you send us a note explaining your background and current situation along with a writing sample. We prefer samples in MS Word or ASCII format (UUENCODED for travel over the Internet). Please note
that all correspondence becomes the property of Network Computing.

How are corporate networks chosen to be profiled in the Centerfold?
Networks profiled in the Centerfold must be an interesting and unique corporate application. We look for enterprise, heterogeneous networks that show an innovative application of network technology. We look for attention-grabbers. For consideration, send the salient details of the network with the contact name, number, and a brief description of the network to Kelly Jackson Higgins, Contributing Editor. Kelly can be reached at kjhiggins@aol.com or at (804) 985-7588.
How do I get my product covered in Workshops?
The Workshops section is not a product-oriented section. Rather we cover the how-to's of networking in this section, discussing issues such as implementations, interoperability, and design. In the Workshops, we tell you how to get the products working together.
Who should receive my press release?
Network Computing delivers hands-on, technical information about computing in a networked environment. The vast majority of our editorial is derived from our editors' hands-on product reviews conducted in our Real-World Labs. Our editorial is not driven by the cycle of press releases; rather it's driven by our editorial calendar and our reviews schedule.
For consideration in a review or feature, send your release to Lorna Garey, our Features Editor, as well as to the editor who covers that beat. Target the editors according to their beats. We have a published beats list at /docs/beats.html or please contact Eileen Bellafiore for a faxed copy at ebellafiore@cmp.com. You may also fax press releases to our main editorial fax at (516) 562-7293.
Who do I contact for general editorial questions?
You can contact Eileen Bellafiore, our East Coast Office Supervisor. She can be reached at ebellafiore@cmp.com, or at (516) 562-5701.
Vendor and PR Contact Information:
If you're a vendor or press relations specialist trying to figure out what articles we have coming up, please consult our 2004 Editorial Calendar. Note that we have as much as a 6-month lead time, so please plan ahead if you think you should be contacting us about your products or services. We'd love to hear from you.
Each of our technology editors has assigned areas of focus called beats. You can check our published beats list at /docs/beats.html or please contact Eileen Bellafiore for a faxed copy at ebellafiore@cmp.com.
When you are putting together information to send to a technical editor, please provide as much technical information in detail as possible, including white papers. However, it is our section editors who are responsible for planning the articles that belong in the magazine and online and for finding in-house as well as freelance writers to get those projects accomplished. So if you're interested in a specific Feature or Review, contact
Lorna Garey,
for Buyer's Guides, Sneak Previews, and our Quick Takes section, Patricia Thomas.
We do, by far, prefer e-mail to FAXes and phone calls. Plus, we're all over the U.S. in different lab sites, so you'll save long distance charges and trees when using fully digital interaction.
How do I know which editor to contact?
You can check our published beats list at /docs/beats.html or please contact Eileen Bellafiore for a faxed copy at ebellafiore@cmp.com.
How do I contact Network Computing's Web site editors?
Check us out at www.networkcomputing.com. We have Reviews, Workshops, Buyer's Guides and business trend news that are available only on the Web -- not in our print edition. Additionally, you can browse the current and past issues of Network Computing. Brad Shimmin, our Director of Internet Operations (bshimmin@mac.com), heads up the online team: Tom LaSusa, Site Editor/Producer (tlasusa@cmp.com), and Debbie Morrison, Newsletter Editor (dmorrison@nwc.com).
The Network Computing Interactive Network Design Manual is another of our Web-only ventures. You can learn how to design, troubleshoot and implement networks in this monthly Web series.
What are the best methods of contacting the editors?
Please contact the editors via e-mail. E-mail is a highly efficient means of communication, and we can respond most quickly to it. You can reach any Network Computing editor by sending mail to them by using their first initial and last name at nwc.com as the Internet mail address.
If you can't e-mail us, then fax us. Our main editorial fax # is (516) 562-7293. Send detailed product information by mail to: CMP Media, Inc., Network Computing Editorial, 600 Community Drive, Manhasset, NY 11030. Our technology editors spend the vast majority of their time in the labs, testing products and writing reviews.
What is Network Computing's lead time?
Network Computing has about a four-five month lead time. For reviews, lead times can extend to six months. We test products for approximately one month. For Sneak Previews, we have a six-week lead time and test products for a day or two.
Does Network Computing sign non-disclosures?
We sign non-disclosures. In fact, we encourage them. We'll accept beta and early products in our labs. Our Sneak Preview section is designed to take first looks at early products. Please contact Patricia Thomas, Associate Editor, for Sneak Preview information.
Does Network Computing encourage vendors to set up on-site visits?
Yes, seeing the product is always better than hearing about it. Come by and visit. Show us your products. Bring your technical people. To arrange a meeting with one of our editors, contact Eileen Bellafiore, our East Coast Office Supervisor, at (516) 562-5701 or e-mail her at ebellafiore@cmp.com.
Does Network Computing accept articles contributed by vendors?
No. We do not accept articles written by the vendor community. We will be happy to read your white papers as background information.
How do I get reprints of an article published in Network Computing?
Contact Christopher Cody in our Manhasset, NY office. He's at (516) 562-7026 or at ccody@cmp.com and he can help you with electronic and print copies.
What is Network Computing's Circulation and Who is your audience?
