A Network Computing Webcast:
SSDs and New Storage Options in the Data Center

March 13, 2013
11:00 AM PT / 2:00 PM ET

Solid state is showing up at every level of the storage stack -- as a memory cache, an auxiliary storage tier for hot data that's automatically shuttled between flash and mechanical disk, even as dedicated primary storage, so-called Tier 0. But if funds are limited, where should you use solid state to get the best bang for the buck? In this Network Computing webcast, we'll discuss various deployment options.

IBM's Broad, Deep Data Protection And Retention Portfolio Strategy

December 02, 2011 09:50 AM
Posted by David Hill

That there is a data explosion is well-known. However, it is not simply an increase in volume for existing data and applications; it also involves new types of data for new applications. The resulting mix does not support all the same data protection and retention requirements businesses are used to, so a comprehensive portfolio of data protection and retention products and services is necessary to cover all requirements. IBM is one vendor that offers such a comprehensive portfolio.

The Data Rich Are Different--They Use Tape

November 08, 2011 01:58 PM

I recently had the pleasure of attending a press and analyst day with the good folks from Spectra Logic, where the state of the market for tape storage finally sunk in. While most corporate users have evolved their backup processes to reduce, or eliminate, their reliance on tape, users with lots of data still find tape to be the best solution. F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, "The rich are different," and that's true for those who are rich in data, as well.

Data Deduplication And SSDs: Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together

November 01, 2011 09:12 AM

It should come as no surprise to even the most casual observer that data deduplication and SSDs have been the most significant technologies in storage during the past few years. Until recently, however, they have been applied to very different problems. The solid state storage story has been about performance, but data deduplication, while it has begun to sneak into primary storage, was about efficiency and was mostly relegated to secondary storage systems.

Quantum Simplifies Deduping Disk Target

July 28, 2011 07:00 AM

Quantum has come out with a new system that could shake things up a little in the backup storage market. Somehow Quantum has managed to get Veg-a-matic like flexibility into the DXi6700 while simplifying the purchase process and adding a new hybrid deduplication scheme, all at a new lower price.

Goodbye Dropbox

June 28, 2011 11:00 AM

I’ve been a heavy user of Dropbox ever since I moved DeepStorage Labs back to the beautiful New Jersey Meadowlands at the end of 2009. Dropbox life was easy, giving me access to all my recent work wherever I was, but a constant stream of security problems is driving me to find another solution.
