Riverbed Broadens Backup, Cloud Storage Appeal

Riverbed Technology is expanding the total addressable market for its Whitewater family of cloud storage accelerator and backup products with the addition of EMC NetWorker, Quest vRanger and CA ARCserve Backup support. The company says that this gives it access to more than 75 percent of the backup market.

In addition, it has signed on the Nirvanix Storage Delivery Network (SDN) to the list of major cloud storage service providers that includes EMC Atmos and Amazon's Simple Storage System (S3). According to Nirvanix, the combination will assuage customer concerns about the performance, complexity, manageability and costs associated with off-site tape storage.

NETWORK COMPUTING contributor Howard Marks, a fan of Riverbed's Cloud Steelhead offering, was impressed with the Whitewater storage appliance. "By caching, deduplicating and encrypting data independently of both the backup application and the cloud provider, Whitewater acts as an enabler for disk-to-disk to cloud backup. While backup apps like Backup Exec and Commvault Simpana have supported both deduplication and cloud storage for a while, the combination can put a serious strain on the media server."

Available in virtual and physical versions (in 2TB, 7TB and 11TByte raw capacity), Whitewater features in-line deduplication to reduce data size by 10 to 30 times on average, and cuts the cost of data protection by reducing both bandwidth requirements for moving backup data into the cloud, as well as the overall consumption of cloud storage.

The company says it can reduce data protection capital costs by reducing the dependence on disk-to-disk backup and tape archiving and using a pay-as-you-go cloud storage model. It also offers tape replacement at up to half the cost of all available tape replacement options.
