Solid state is showing up at every level of the storage stack -- as a memory cache, an auxiliary storage tier for hot data that's automatically shuttled between flash and mechanical disk, even as dedicated primary storage, so-called Tier 0. An SMB Masters Business Intelligence

Worth says a final release for the project is scheduled for mid-summer and that will include integrated financial audits. After this, future IT initiatives will include enhancements to dashboards and reports, the integration of a CRM system and the addition of sales system automation.

Regardless of which system initiatives TMG pursues next, it will be done in an environment that features integration instead of system silos. "The concept aligns with what our definition of "customer" is, which is not just clients but also sub-contractors," says Worth. "We want to see every element of our business."

What recommendations does Worth have for other SMBs considering a similar project? "Do more upfront forensics on the quality of your source data before integrating and warehousing it," he suggests. "Also, set your expectations for the project before you start it. Finally, remember that perfection is not always the key. Get the tool into people's hands as early as you can so they can see the benefit."

And if you're an SMB with a limited budget? "This isn't a project that is typical for an SMB," acknowledges Worth. "But, when management buys in and sees the competitive advantage you can create for the business, you find yourself asking, 'Why not?'"
