Where the Cloud Touches Down: Simplifying Data Center Infrastructure Management

Thursday, July 25, 2013
10:00 AM PT/1:00 PM ET

In most data centers, DCIM rests on a shaky foundation of manual record keeping and scattered documentation. OpManager replaces data center documentation with a single repository for data, QRCodes for asset tracking, accurate 3D mapping of asset locations, and a configuration management database (CMDB). In this webcast, sponsored by ManageEngine, you will see how a real-world datacenter mapping stored in racktables gets imported into OpManager, which then provides a 3D visualization of where assets actually are. You'll also see how the QR Code generator helps you make the link between real assets and the monitoring world, and how the layered CMDB provides a single point of view for all your configuration data.

BMC Promises Capacity Control For Virtualized Environments

Today enterprise management vendor BMC Software is rolling out a new portfolio of software solutions designed to help system administrators better allocate IT resources on the basis of business service requirements for their entire IT environment by extending their real-time control over all of their systems from mainframes and distributed systems to their virtualized servers. Dubbed the Service Oriented Resource Management (SORM) solutions, BMC’s provisioning software fits in with the company’s overall Business Service Management (BSM) strategy which aims to tie business relevance to IT resource management. SORM includes both the new BMC Virtualizer Suite which coordinates on-demand resource provisioning, and new predictive capabilities for BMC’s Performance Assurance for Virtual Servers 7.3 performance analysis package which system administrators can use to make resource acquisition and deployment decisions.

The new BMC Virtualizer solutions offer automated policy-based resource management and provisioning for enterprise clusters and standalone server. BMC Virtualizer allows server resources to be shared across multiple applications, in the case of a failure or an instance when extra capacity is needed on demand. Both of the initial two products in this group -- BMC Virtualizer for High Availability and BMC Virtualizer for Capacity on Demand integrate with BMC Performance Manager; BMC Performance Assurance; Marimba Software Configuration Management and Discovery; and BMC Atrium' CMDB

BMC Performance Assurance for Virtual Servers can now determine how critical business applications will perform during and after the shift from physical to a virtual environment. Systems administrators can use the software on an ongoing basis to make sure they are getting the maximum application performance in virtual server environments like Microsoft, VMware, and XEN.

BMC is promising SORM will help system administrators create and automatically apply the provisioning policies necessary to have adequate capacity in place at the time it is required. And BMC claims the efficiencies created will produce more than just excellent performance benefits by making it possible for companies to combine datacenters to improve efficiency and their cost structure. Dave Wagner, Director of BMC Solutions Marketing for Capacity Planning and Provisioning, says companies can expect dramatic improvements in utilization efficiency, with up to a 400% utilization Increase and the potential for more than a 40% cost savings.

Both the new BMC Virtualizer software and BMC Performance Assurance for Virtual Servers are shipping immediately.
