VMware: The Virtualization Drag: Page 9 of 13

We used SQLIOSim to measure performance of prioritized and non-prioritized loads, while using LoadSim to generate competing load. In these tests we used both the default SQLIOSim configuration, as well as three other configuration files that operated in system memory.

Initially we measured performance with the two VMs splitting the available 4.7 GHz of processing power. In this configuration, in the memory intensive test, performance dipped between 4 percent and roughly 7 percent. We then allocated 3 GHz of processing power to the SQLIOSim system and the remaining 1.7 GHz to the LoadSim test system. Performance swung back to the level we saw when running SQLIOSim without any contention for resources.

ESX Server uses the same interface and conventions for allocating CPU performance and system memory through the Virtual Infrastructure Client. We could set CPU performance as a percent of available MHz or as a set number of MHz, as well as set the number of processors available. When it came to setting memory, we could allocate a percent of available memory or a specific number of megabytes to a given VM.

VIRTUALIZATION BY THE NUMBERS

Yankee Group surveyed 700 IT managers and C-level executives about their virtualization plans. Respondents represent a wide variety of vertical and horizontal businesses:
62: Percentage of respondents with server virtualization projects in the works
1: Position of VMware in terms of market share. Microsoft's Virtual Server is second with 29 percent
1: Weeks it took 25 percent of respondents to deploy virtualization. Eleven percent said it took longer than six months.
9: Percentage of respondents who have yet to see ROI
26: Percentage who saw ROI immediately; of those, 13 percent cited ROI of 20 percent to 30 percent.
96: Percentage of organizations expected to use virtualization in at least some capacity by 2008.
