The data de-duplication appliances have completely eliminated any use of tape, and compress data as much as 20:1, and storing only data that has changed to an offsite facility. While de-dupe is most commonly associated with backups, Douglas also recommended its use in file serving applications to cut down on the amount of stored data in that part of the network.
