Although sometimes perceived as the domain of cone-head scientists working on obscure research projects, supercomputing sites such as SDSC are invariably the testing ground for next-generation enterprise storage, according to Banister.

“Supercomputing centers push the limits of scale on almost every computer science technology, especially in the storage area,” he says. “We work closely with a lot of companies on the development of their storage networking and compute technologies – we break a lot of things.”

Clearly, enterprises wrestling with rapidly growing SAN infrastructures could do worse than cast their eyes toward San Diego.
